Potato Harvest 2017
My potatoes started my gardening this year back in January when a couple of Yukon Golds started growing in the kitchen. I moved them to a blue barrel I cut in half and filled. The foliage died back and here's the harvest. Glad I've got lots of spinach to eat with them. It's a learning process.

Yum! I planted some sprouted gold potatoes that I found in a kitchen cabinet last month. I hope my luck is as good as yours.

Here's something from a post I did earlier. Not sure how complete it is and can't recall the source. Hope it helps. "Determinate potatoes such as Red Pontiacs, Chieftains and Yukon gold only grow tubers from just above where the seed potatoe is planted. Indeterminates such as Russet Nuggets, Nicholas, German Butterballs and Elba grow tubers anywhere along the stem that soil exists." Might ask where you get your seed potatoes. Here's a link that might help too. http://www.ehow.com/list_7461703_potato-varieties-bin-growing.html

I wasn't planning to grow potatoes, since they aren't on our new Fuhrman diabetes diet, but after listening to what Paul says (BTE) the problem with potatoes is how they're grown, and the rest of our family still eats them, I will now be growing potatoes in deep mulch. I will look for Yukon Gold to start. , Geezer.

Thanks TNG. Good advice in that video. I have a plastic 45 gallon drum/barrel that I am thinking of cutting in half so that I have two good sized containers but they would be too big to move in and out of the garage. I'll look into the grow bags as another option.

Good stuff, thanks, TNGeezer! I was actually struggling with where to put my now sprouting YGs from last year that were weirdly shaped and hard to actually cook....Save!

A 55 gallon blue barrel cut in half makes a good sized planter but that thing is heavy when full. Slippery like a greased pig too. Might have to figure out some handles for it.

Re: Potato Harvest 2017
My curiosity got the better of me today. I've been growing Yukon Gold Potatoes in the leftovers of a compost bin surrounded by hardware cloth. I dug in at the base of one of the plants closest to the front edge and here is what I found. The big potato is 5 inches long by 3 inches wide and weighs about 10 oz. Total haul was 1.5 lbs ... not bad for an experiment.

Re: Potato Harvest 2017
Nice! I actually accidentally pulled one while weeding Monday night, will need to get the rest from that square! I have 4 or 5 more squares going, but they went in after spring lettuces/spinaches.
I love Yukon Gold. Thin skins, delicious buttery flavor before the butter! Nice potato. I have also grown Kennebunk. Typical russet.

Blue Pots
This'll be my first year growing potatoes and I've decided to try with some All Blues. I really enjoyed mashed blue potatoes so I decided to attempt to grow them.
The bushes are really, really nice. I have no idea how the potatoes are growing as they tops are strong and green right now, but I'm hoping for a nice bountiful harvest.

And you're making at least one of us think of pasties. But I've no homegrown rutabegas yet, and it's really a bit hot yet for turning on the oven, so making them will just have to wait.SwampTroll wrote:bigblue94 wrote:tngeezer i'm impressed that someone knows what a yooper is.

Re: Potato Harvest 2017
We continue to harvest Yukon Gold potatoes out of the old compost bin containing leftovers from screened compost. We just harvest the potatoes as we need them. One of the grandkids dug out these today. Notice the huge zucchini plant in front of the potato bin as well.

Re: Potato Harvest 2017
Today I harvested the last of my Yukon Gold Potatoes. These were grown in a couple of spare locations in regular soil including one area in a quite shady location in one of Mrs TD's flower beds. There were four plants in all. I aim to grow these again next year as well as another variety of potato yet to be determined.
