potato harvest

They day finally arrived, and I may have blown it... My plants, yellowed and dying for the last month were on their last legs. I figured it was time... They are russet, and when picked I had 20-30 of them total... But.. take a look, they are smaller than the supermarket ones. Did I pick too early??

Are the skins on them thick or thin? If they are thin enough that the skins break when handled you will want to eat them soon and not store them. The look great to me though, were the tops of the plants completely dead or still partly green?

I have potatoes! Just couldn't wait any longer! I didn't take care of them the way they should have been. With family issues they were just stuck in 4" under and 6" about them of MM...these are kennebec that should grow potatoes all the way along the stock. I am so going to do this next year! At least my bins are already made! I would have waited longer to harvest but was ready lol...the plants weren't dead..just starting to die. But I know there would not be that many. There were more than I expected!

Here's another look at them cleaned and ready to go in the cellar for a few days

This was from 5 cuts planted in a whiskey barrel... Now as it's my experiment year, I'd say next time I'll leave them in ground another few weeks, maybe harvest on september 1st... And I'l be planting many many more cuts, I love home grown vege's!!!

They sure do look tasty! I will be planting more of them next year as well, I planted 9 squares of yukon gold and red pontiacs and can't wait to dig em up! My tops look about like yours so I am leaving them in the ground for a few more weeks. Hubby snuck one out for me the other day and still seemed to new to dig up the whole batch! Have some good eats for me hungry

wow! nice harvest! we planted some when we were "supposed to". Didn't even get a sprout. Planted some when we were not supposed to, and they're over the top of the barrel! Can't wait to see what's in there. They are super green and huge with no wilting in sight, so we'll see!!

CindiLou, congratulations on your Kennebec harvest. They are a delicious kind of potato. We planted them last year, got a modest harvest, and forgot them....until this past spring, when all of a sudden a whole bunch of new plants sprouted. What a Face

Obviously we didn't do the best job of getting every tiny potato out. This volunteer potato plot has just now started flowering, so it'll be at least a month before we dig them, and sift the compost for any tiny piece of potato in order to avoid another year with an unplanned potato patch.

wow... i say thats a great harvest from five cuts in a wine barrel!!!

we grew ours last year in wine barrels and trash cans......this year we put them in the ground.....i think they did about the same Shocked

as far as how many taters we got per plant.....

your harvest looks much larger then the harvest we got from our wine barrels last year potato harvest 3170584802

Will do Chopper. If I remember correctly, ours never died last year, so we tipped the barrel over. Got a few, but nothing to write home about. Hoping for more this time! I'll try and remember to post back atcha!!

If they come back up next year it will be ok..potato onions going in the bins. So every thing else will be pulled. I found some potato bags on clearance for $2..I know they won't last more than a year of two but I want to try them. They have a zip down door to sneak baby tators out rofl

I seemed to take a long, long time for our red potato foliage to die! But once it was all dead we harvested.

Hi all! I planted 5 starts of purple potatoes at the end of June
and am not sure when to harvest it was just an experiment to see what
Id get using a store bought tater I just stuck them into an open square
they are growing great and I mounded them up when they were about
8" tall now I'm just waiting to see what I get next year I plan on building
a box for them that will be 2' X 2'wide X 4' tall

So what I'm getting from this thread is, I wait until the tops die off then harvest?
Is that right?

Yeppers! They can even stay in the ground for a few weeks after they are dead as long as it's not freezing.

If you leave them in the ground for a while before harvesting, watch out for: (1) working themselves up close enough to the surface and turning green--solution: cover bed with plenty of mulch. (2) moles and voles: moles make tunnels, voles use tunnels and chew on potatoes--solution: line bottom of SFG boxes with 1/4-inch hardware cloth. Solution to both of above: trim away and discard green parts of potatoes; cut off gnawed portions before using. Nonna, who's been there, done that.

Hello fellow gardeners!
My potatoes never flowered but thankfully they did produce! I dug up 2 squares today, 4 sets of reds and 4 of yukon golds. I harvested 8 YG and 17 reds. This was my second digging and I got many more YGs this time.
They are sooo good! Very Happy

My zukes and yellow squash are slowing putting on fruit. The cukes are still slow. The acorn squash are growing pretty good and I have several fruit at various sizes.

My tomatoes are delicious! Picked 8 tomatoes on Sunday and 3 today. The plants are still full of growing maters!
My pole beans are flowering well and I see a few little beans now.
Now I'm just trying to keep the aphids off of my plants so I can continue to harvest.

Picture taken today. The plants are thriving and still setting blooms. We planted Norgold Russet on May 26. Aubrey wants to try some. Should we wait until the vines yellow and die off? I'm really curious to see what we got.
