Welland Ship Canal

Where my Mom lived in St.Catharines is about one mile from the Welland Ship Canal, part of the St. Lawrence Seaway, that connects Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. This way the ships do not have to go over Niagara Falls and the various rapids and whirlpool in the Niagara River (which of course would not be possible).

Here are some photos we took today. The ship is the Right Honourable Paul J. Martin. The ship is a self unloading bulk carrier and is 739 feet long and 78 feet across. It is part of the fleet of Canada Steamship Lines. In the photos it is entering Lock 1 of the canal which will drop it down to the level of Lake Ontario.

Nope. It probably carries ore. It has a built in conveyor system including a conveyor on a long boom which allows it to self-unload the cargo from the hold.

When I started out as an electrical engineer, I was involved in the design and installation of some of the electrical systems for these lake freighters which were being built or refit at Port Weller Dry Docks in St. Catharines, Ontario.
