eggplant - What Have You Picked From Your Garden Today - Page 16 Empty 'maters & herbs

Post  lisawallace88 10/2/2023, 2:46 pm

I thought my tomatoes were done, but they proved me wrong!  Harvested prob another pound or so, mostly spoon tomatoes!  I have NEVER seen a tomato so prolific!  Doesn't seem like much because each one is so small, but all told, I probably got 5,000 of the little guys!  Shocked

Also still getting bell peppers which didn't really even start to grow until about September, and of course the herbs are still going gang busters!  I hope to end up with a year's worth of basil!

The Spinach is really enjoying the cooler nighttime temperatures, and is growing faster than we can consume it.

Yes, and used in cooking throughout the winter.

I made the delicious tetsukabuto squash yesterday.  It is a winter squash that I would liken to acorn.  I baked mine at 350* for 45 minutes after cleaning out in the oven. Then I turned it over, put butter and maple syrup on there and baked it for another 20 minutes.  REALLY good!  Yummy, loved this.  Leftovers taken to work!

I ended up relegating my squash. Both summer and winter, to my cold frame mostly due to open space.  Not a good idea.  But I did get plenty of production….

eggplant - What Have You Picked From Your Garden Today - Page 16 Empty Summer Squash - Fall 2023

Post  markqz 10/27/2023, 12:12 am

It's weird how these squash to grow. In September it was actually sunny, yet the squash only yielded tiny, stunted fruits. Now it's a month into Fall, and ...

eggplant - What Have You Picked From Your Garden Today - Page 16 XCOCIuP

I could have let it grow bigger, but my neighborhood skunk has taken to snacking on zucchini in that irritating way that animals do where they destroy it with a bite but don't actually eat it. Although, maybe it's a neighborhood coyote. But that's another story. Anyways, I decided to play it safe and harvest it -- it's actually 11 inches long, though somehow it looks shorter than that in the photo.

If you're wondering why there's a garden stake in the photo ... the zucchini was lonely.

I decided to pick these Snow Fairy tomatoes and see if they ripen inside, since the plant they're on is clear dead.

I also harvested the green and blushing Snow Fairies and took out the 10 plants. Some will ripen, others may go in green salsa and others the garbage can. Laughing

Picked some Lettuce and Spinach from the raised bed in the greenhouse. I am so glad that I decided to put that 2'x6' raised bed in the greenhouse. It has been more productive than I expected, and we love fresh greens. Currently I have lettuce, spinach, Bok Choy, Napa Cabbage, and Swiss Chard growing in various levels of succession planting in the bed.

I picked the green zucchini because I wanted to get to it before the local critter did. I picked the yellow zucchini because there are at least 4 other fruits coming, and I doubt any of them are going to get big. Although the zucchini keep flowering and fruiting, the days are very short which probably prevents the fruits from reaching full-size.

I am so jealous!   16ºF here this morning, and the gardens are snuggled into their beds for the winter.

They spend their days in a covered plastic dish pan covered with a dark dishtowel or in brown paper bags from the grocery on the tile floor in the kitchen. The tile is 60*F which is the best place I can find. No basement or enclosed porch, etc.
