possible substitute for tulle.
Keep an eye on this product and watch for reviews and if it goes on sale.
http://www.territorialseed.com/product/Micromesh
tulle is 54" wide and 1.99 a yd or $10.61 for 16 ft plus you can get it 20-50% off with coupons, BUT this product is UV stabilized and may last more than a season.
I see it being one package for a 4x4 bed as I use about 14ft of tulle per 4x4. Needs to come by yard for more versatility.

Do you put tulle over Brassicas? Would it help my beans from the Japanese beetles?

Yes on brassicas but beans need to be open to pollinators.

I use the cheap netting curtains from IKEA. They are $3.99 for two panels that are about 98" x 110".
I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Re: possible substitute for tulle.
That fabric looks promising Kay. Joanne's does sell the tulle in 108 inch widths in addition to the 54 inch. The 108 inch width is better for me. I have 3 feet by 8 feet beds with 8 foot pvc hoops. Here are the results of a web search for Tulle 108. I do not know if this is the correct tulle to purchase though. And it really only lasts me from April to October before it begins to start wearing out.

Kim, how long to the Ikea curtains last?
Re: possible substitute for tulle.
Just did a quick search;

So maybe I can protect my beans next year!

I've used the 108" tulle as well but found 54" was a good size for my 4x4 beds with 10' pvc hoops.

So far they've lasted 2 seasons. BUT if you get them caught in thorns . . . not so much.

Honestly, since this was my first year SFGing, I was caught off guard by the Japanese Beetles. There were so many of them, and there was no end. They were here the whoe year. No breeding season. Just everywhere...beans devoured. Unbelievably, the KY wonder kept producing, but it was just so ugly.....I used to use Sevin , but will never again in defense of bees.....
Tulle may be in my future for sure.

Re: possible substitute for tulle.
This year is very bad for the beetles. I live near farms that have just harvested soy beans. Within a 24 hour period they all decided to visit my house. (a cedar board and batten exterior) Had to resort to BugMax which I sprayed on the siding and around the doors and windows. I could not even walk outside for the last 3 days. They are awful. Have 2 vacuum cleaners plugged in of 2 different floors just so I can keep up with the ones that have made it into the house. Too bad they are not edible.Scorpio Rising wrote:Honestly, since this was my first year SFGing, I was caught off guard by the Japanese Beetles. There were so many of them, and there was no end. For some reason last year was not as bad. According to the farmers, this has been an awful year for aphids. All the leaves of the ash trees have also been destroyed by them.

Re: possible substitute for tulle.
I've tried tulle and 2 other mail order items, this material I have used for 3 season and it shows no wear..
Smaller insects are able to get in, however I'm noticing when they do al they want is to get out and can't.
Moths along with larger beetles cannot get in, and it does confuse and deter small insects.
It comes in 6 ft wide X how many yards you want. Price was $3.99 per yard, I waited for a 50% sale and then used coupons from Joanns email that brought it down even more.
I think I eventually paid $1.50 a yard
This is all I will ever use in the future.
This year I kept in on all season, it's still on and I am sure it will protect somewhat from frost also.

Jimmy, I know you posted the name of this particular fabric but could you repost it? Thanks
Re: possible substitute for tulle.
I tried locating it on Joanns site. Best I can do is to stop off at their store the next time I am in the area...sorry, but I thought I saved it, apparently not.

Re: possible substitute for tulle.
I'm not sure about sewing it, I use the waxed twine for just about everything outside. Some has lasted me 10+ years.
I slip twine into a large upholstery needle then just thread it into the holes...the 6 foot wide was perfect for my beds, from the top down to sides. I never had to stitch it together, just over lap...and clip..but the stitching can be done nicely
I love the stuff

DANG! Got me a 60% off coupon in the email good thru Sunday & I'm headed that way on Sunday if we don't get a Nor'easter.
I was reading the previous posts here and see that you use waxed twine, Jimmy. If you don't sew it with a needle, do you just hand thread it in and out? Or how?

A kit of upholstery needles does the trick, some fairly lagre needles and a couple that are almost a circle.CapeCoddess wrote:DANG! Got me a 60% off coupon in the email good thru Sunday & I'm headed that way on Sunday if we don't get a Nor'easter.

Re: possible substitute for tulle.
I bought a 50 yard bolt online for $28 + $10 shipping. I have it waiting in my greenhouse. I think I'm going to wrap the greenhouse sides with it this summer as I had terrible tomatoe worms last year. It was cheaper to get more than I will need and only took a week or so to arrive. I got the 108" width.
