french marigolds ??? Empty french marigolds ???

Post  jimmy cee 6/26/2015, 10:40 pm

Unless I've mis interpreted  what I have read about these french marigolds, I thought they are used to assist in repelling bugs.

Well these that I have don't.
I found in the dark about 2 hours after dark, a snail, couple of earwigs, and 2 cucumber beetles eating away.
EATING THE MARIGOLDS......LOL....
I think my gardens alive more so during the dark hours than when I am with it during the day
Found some nice spider webs, one was so tiny and a wee spider was feasting on a wee bug.
I once eliminated spider webs, not any more.
So what's your take on marigolds ?

They do have pests, according to Cornell U.  They have always been touted as being repellent of pests in the garden.  I like them, but don't put them in my veggie garden!

Marigolds are the first thing bugs eat in my garden. Luckily they're very very cheap at the nursery, so I can continually replant.

I've planted them more or less everywhere and gotten plenty of pests, everywhere, regardless.

I have planted Dwarf French Marigolds for the last three years.  Never had any kind of bug problem.  Pollinator sent them to me and I have been saving seeds ever since.  He said that if you plant them around a squash bed, they will keep away the squash bugs.  But I never tried that cause I am more worried about the Squash Vine Borer.

They stand up to heat and drought and keep on flowering up until the first freeze in late fall.  Here are a few pictures of plants I started in small pots and put under the lights.

The last picture is in my SFG.  Four plants in a 2' x 2' bed.  Just happy as a lark.  Everything else is wilting in this heat and I don't even have to water these.

The long row of Marigolds are planted near an old oak tree and only get sun from about 2pm until 9pm.  They are doing well but do not have as many flowers as the ones planted in full sun in my SFG.

Very vibrant display.

I love how durable they are. Last year I had some that I left in their seedling 4-pack just to see what would happen, and they lived through the whole record-setting hot summer and kept producing. It seems no pot is too small, though the smaller the pot, the more watering it needs. Still, I can't recall seeing any other plant put up with that level of abuse and still look good.

I wonder if its the stain of marigolds you have that caused the bugs to munch.

The marigold boarder looks gorgeous by the way.

Nice border, yolos.  I like the dwarf yellow the best as they contrast nicely with the  dark green leaves.  I have some that are mostly reddish and they do not stand out at all. That's the trouble when buying late, no choice.

My understanding currently is that it is not the lovely French marigold that repels insects but another kind, which we have grown and I can't at the moment remember its name.  Not nearly as pretty. I'll post the name when I find it.
