I couldn't help it. today I planted German red, hardneck white (?) and soft neck white (locla farmer's market). I have plenty to plant in a week or two. I wish I had known the reds have a hot bite. Just have to wait until spring to see if I will do them again.

German red is spicy hot when raw. Cooking calms it way down so you don't need as much.  Roasting takes away 100% of the heat. It becomes very mild and nutty. The difference between raw and roasted is two extreme and unique experiences.

Need to clarify what I meant to say right above your post:  Raw German red is spicy so a little goes a long way!

The second line from that post is gibberish, beginning with, "Cooking calms it .."
and that's what I get for writing while half awake in the middle of the night....

I ordered Polish White garlic bulbs from Filaree Garlic Farm early September.
I had also tried to order Russian Red but they were out of them already.

Luckily I grew some Russian Red last year so I will be planting some of the larger bulbs this fall.

I usually plant them around Halloween.

Just purchased some "Music" garlic from the local farmer's co-op this week. I'll probably put them in some time tomorrow or after the weekend.

I'm using cloves from the heads I grew last season, so yes, garlic order received!  Back in June or so...  Cool

I would like to plant some of mine but then my first braid would be broken! What a Face They aren't very big.
Garlic - Garlice order received, anyone else in our region? - Page 2 Garlic10
Any chance the babies could grow bigger than the parents if I planted some of the cloves? Speaking of large, there were only 3 giant cloves on one of the 2 German Reds I ordered. Is that normal for them?

The theory goes that planting stuff you grew last season from seeds (or in this case cloves) you saved, will result in plants that are predisposed to be acclimated to your particular environment/conditions/nutrient mix, etc.  Over the years, assuming consistency in your treatment of them, they should get bigger and better.  That's the theory...I'm willing to try it this year!

So far, my experience has been that the Siberian garlic I started with two years ago and re-planted does keep getting bigger.  Some of this year's bulbs were nearly 3" in diameter.

Garlic - Garlice order received, anyone else in our region? - Page 2 Empty Italian Garlic

Post  Windmere 10/10/2014, 1:33 pm

Planting Italian Garlic from Southern Exposure.  At first there was some confusion as to whether what I bought is "Early Italian" garlic (which can be hard to find... getting organic shipped to a GA address is also real problem).  Based on shape, size, color and characteristics... it's Early Italian like I wanted.  Also, Southern Exposure offers and "Italian Late" variety.  Mine matures earlier, so....

Unfortunately my shipment included two rotten bulbs (critters got into them... yep, they're organic) and half of one bulb had shriveled cloves.

A replacement shipment was immediately sent (I got them today).  They shipped me and entire order, not just the three bulbs.  All the bulbs from this shipment are perfect.  Needless to say, I am very happy with Southern Exposure's customer service.

I see from previous posts that just about everyone is happy with the companies from whom they bought garlic.  That is such good news.  It is nice to know that there are so many reputable companies out there.

I planted the first batch either Monday or Tuesday.  I plan on planting the new order tomorrow.  Last year I planted October 2 and had some pretty good results.  bnoles (independent of me) planted his on October 2 as well.
