Succession planting Beans
I'm putting in a green/red/yellow bean bed this weekend. It's 4'x8' and I'll do succession planting of 8 kinds of beans each month on the 15th, April, May, June & July. Seems "best" to plant April on the long north side of the bed, each successive planting one row closer to the south -- so seedlings will not have to compete for sunlight with older plants.
But is that better, or should I protect each succession of seedlings from the increasing heat?
Thoughts?

It depends on the varieties you're planting. If you purchased heat-tolerant varieties, you should be fine doing the method you described. If your varieties aren't heat-tolerant, I would make sure they can get some afternoon shade by the time June rolls around. Veggies may wilt a little in the TN summer heat, but as long as they perk up by morning, they're just fine. I experienced that with my tomatoes last year, and this year just made sure to get heat-resistant varieties. Good luck!

Heat tolerant varieties? Mmm... not sure.
Red Noodle yard long
Green noodle yard long
rattlesnake
black turtle 1700s
Goldrush
blue lake bush
dragon tongue
stringless burpee
royal burgundy
Cherokee wax
I planted the pole beans on the arches and they will eventually shade the bush beans, which I'm planting south-to-north so the succession that is done producing will help shade the ones getting started. May backfire on me, but we'll see.

I was told that the rattlesnake beans were heat tolerant. I will be planting them this summer for the first time so we shall see.

ENT, the summers get HOT here. The Dragon Tongues were great last year. This year I have Dragon Tongue, Rattlesnake, Purple Podded, and Chinese Red Noodle.

I also did dragon tongue last year and they produced all summer long through a very hot summer.

My dragon tongues last year were crap. Not sure why.
I think my sunflower plant can take me in a fair fight...it's taller than me, and it keeps giving me dirty looks.

No space wasted at my house. This is the east side next to the public sidewalk. The trellises are 8' tall so the unusual looking Chinese Red Noodle and Purple Podded can be seen by walkers and drivers. The far end box is Rattlesnake with a 5' trellis. They can fall over the fence if needed. I don't know why but every time I take photos, the yard looks so junky and unattended.
