Welcome aboard Homesteadgirl. I have learned a lot from the folks here. I am a newbie in that this is only my second spring using SFG. I have avoided many missteps thanks to people who imparted experiences.
I think you will enjoy your time here. Happy gardening!!

Re: Hello from Iowa
Thank you for the nice welcome! I've been following Mel Bartholomew's youtube videos and his growing potatoes in 5-gallon buckets. Trying 5-gallon buckets this season for a change up this season. I had really good luck with my potatoes in a traditional garden (5 plants that yielded 5-6 potatoes on each). I have (3) wicking containers that I'm growing my lettuces, radishes, green onions, carrots and herbs in on my deck and I've added 3 raised beds this season to go along with my traditional garden. We really had a very FRIGID winter here so everything is about a month late from normal. Wishing everyone a great growing season and can't wait to enjoy others ideas and suggestions. It's always good to hear suggestions from other growers for the BEST results.

Re: Hello from Iowa
Hi Homesteadgirl50. Welcome to the party!
Had tomatoes in 5-gallon buckets last year. They did mediocre... But the weather was really screwy and very few people had success with them.
We're doing potatoes for the first time this year. Just decided to put them in a regular bed with a Top Hat. Same for my longer carrots.
Planning on putting herbs in 2-gallon buckets and stacking them. We'll see if that does better. But MM for everything!

Re: Hello from Iowa
Good Morning AtlantaMarie! Thank you for the welcome! I planted my tomatoes in my traditional garden last season. Had two BIG plants from seed and produced a huge healthy crop for me to can sauce and of course enjoy eating. I had great success in planting a whole potato for my first time last season, instead of cutting the where the eyes are and letting them dry for 4 days. I had 5 potato plants that produced 5-6 potatoes each. I've read that on average a single potato plant will produce anywhere from 5-8 potatoes. Take this times however many plants you have could be a healthy crop for anyone. I store my potatoes in a burlap sack in my basement where it's dark and cool. They do fine. Happy gardening to you and hope you have great success with your potatoes as I have.
