I found a 4 cubic foot bag of coarse vermiculite at Southern States today for $19.99 + tax. This was the one item I was having problems finding local. They keep it in the back so you have to ask for it. Also found a bag of Blueridge Super Compost that looks to be some good stuff. A bit pricey though @ $8.99 a cubic foot. cheers

Did you record your find in the vermiculite database?  I picked up a bag of that super compost because it looked pretty good.  Added it to my blend of commercial and homemade.

I'm presently ordering vermiculite from a small farm supply shop in a town 15 miles from me.
It's $21.00 a bag...best deal I have found anywhere..
People looking for it should check on these small shops. they can order almost anything.
Cost all depends on their mark-up.

I went to Southern States in Ranson WV but all they had was the small bags of vermiculite. I went to Weber's Nursery in Winchester VA. And found large 4 cu. ft. bags of coarse vermiculite for $26 and change. I got several types of compost there as well as the peat moss. I did get some lobster compost at wegman's in Leesburg VA.
This will be my first time SFG and I'm excited to get some corn and tomatoes. Got my wood today to start making my boxes....

glad you\'re here Fuzzyphoto. We all remember our first SFGing. Enjoy yourself. Make mistakes then put them behind you and I am sure you will have some sucesses your first season.
What size boxes are you making? Can you post pictures as we all love to see them?
You seem to know what you are doing re compost, but ask questions if needed and they will be answered. Try the search box at the top left hand of this page.

I have had the "all New SFG" book for a few months and yesterday purchased the "SFG Answer Book".

I'm trying to decide between placing my boxes on the ground over a metal mesh and weed barrier or making the boxes with a plywood bottom placed on cement blocks.

If I do the plywood bottom do I still use weed barrier over drain holes?

Good score on the lobster compost, I have been keeping a eye open at the Wegmans close to me but they never have it. So looks as if a road trip to Leesburg, or Dulles store is in order. Thanks for the tip Fuzzyphoto and welcome to the forum.

Fuzzyphoto, I have some wood boxes with plywood bottoms elevated on cement pavers or 2" river rock. I used weed fabric to make sure I didn't lose any MM out of the drainage holes drilled in the plywood.

The rest of my boxes are are set directly on dirt with weed fabric on the bottom and up the sides a couple inches. Folks with burrowing critters (gophers, etc.) lay down metal mesh first, then the weed fabric.

PS I also bought the SFG Answer Book.  Very Happy

Sanderson, I was thinking the weed fabric would be good to save my MM from dropping out. I've decided to go with the wood bottoms for mine. Would be interested to know when folks from around here will plant their items and the types they will plant. I see in the book we can get three crops a year from our SFG but a bit confused when to start what and which one are started from seeds at what time to be ready for transplanting. (Maybe this should be in a different tread)

Hello,

I think I have a Southern States (or affiliate) not to far from where I'm getting all my garden stuff. I'll be checking them out now.

 thanks

Folks, don't forget to put into the vermiculite database where you bought your vermiculite.
