Finally used my Vacola!
That's right, my first attempt at canning. Some gorgeous fresh cherries from Young, NSW, the cherry capital of Australia.
Our new house is a 40 minute drive from Young, it's the next closest town to the south of us and we went to the annual cherry festival this morning. Unfortunately my son started feeling sick so we didn't get to see much but we did buy a 5kg box of cherries from an orchard on the way out of town.
So tonight I pitted and packed 8 jars of them and have just pulled them out of the Vacola. Can't wait to try them!

Beautiful cherries! They'll taste so good when weather gets cold again. What kind of cherry did you can? What is your favorite use for canned cherries? Inquiring mind wants to know. Also, what is the most popular cherry variety in your area overall? Nonna (who has only been able to grow pie cherry Montmorency--birds get all the sweets)

Re: Finally used my Vacola!
That photo made me salivate. I've been hankering for some cherries for a while now.
Well done, Erica! They look absolutely perfect.
And congrats on your new home! Does that mean you'll be building an SFG again? Or did you bring your other ones with you?

Am I the only who didn't know what a vacola is?
They look delicious, Erica.
[Edit: I guess not!]

This is what's left of the box, didn't actually ask the grower what variety they were!
That was a good video Boffer, I knew that Vacola was the Aussie brand of canner but I didn't know the differences between it and Bell Mason. Here's the actual canner, it's still sitting on my sink full of water from last night, I need to empty it this afternoon.

Re: Finally used my Vacola!
Nonna, I haven't actually had any canned cherries before but I'm planning on cherry pies in winter. Mum also has a yummy cherry slice that she makes which is pretty yummy too.
CC, unfortunately I had to leave my SFG behind so I will be starting again here but on a much larger scale! Lots more space at this place, we've already got 7 olive trees, a couple of grape vines and a fig tree and I'm planning on adding citrus trees and a cherry tree and maybe some other things too.

Re: Finally used my Vacola!
Oh, Erica, congratulations on your new home, and the fruit trees you have and intend to have! I'm a bet envious, 'cause would love to grow our own olives to press for oil. Our two fig trees are not as happy in this area as they would be further south, say down near Eugene, OR. We do have some generous Asian pear trees, and apple trees that must be good, at least the nearby elk herd thinks so. Keep us posted on your growing. We live vicariously on your gardening endeavors through this northern hemisphere's winter. Nonna
