Greenhouse fabric? Empty Greenhouse fabric?

Post  Applegate Fri Nov 08, 2013 11:13 pm

I am building a small greenhouse and have had no success finding a cover material in the Rogue Valley. Is online my only option, maybe Eugene some where?

Hi Applegate and welcome to the forum!

I'm not in that area so I'm not familiar with what types of stores there are, but perhaps people could be more helpful if they knew what type of material you were looking for?  *shrug*  Just wondering, because from what I've read people make their greenhouses out of all kinds of stuff.  Anywhere from plastic drop cloths from Home Depot to old windows off of craigslist.

Thanks for the welcome.Very Happy
I am trying to find a source locally for some 4 year poly fabric. We have had a house full of heat mats and starts for the last few years, and need to get something a little more dedicated.
Finally decided to throw up a larger structure. I am no carpenter, but it's coming along.Shocked

'Clear' greenhouse poly sheeting is still going to have a degree of opacity and difusses light more evenly.
http://www.greenhousemegastore.com/category/plastic-greenhouse-film.

Transparent film is less efficient in that you have higher heat loss.

camprn, Are you saying there is no such thing as a true clear greenhouse plastic?
I tried lowes 6 mil and uline 6 mil plastic sheeting last year for the hoop houses, but they were ver milky white in appearances. Of course, they're not true greenhouse plastic. I had to vent the hoop house everyday , usually 3-4 hrs after the sun came out, so I not really worry about losing heat here in texas( temps hitting 95 and above easily).

I got to thinking camprn that the reason My low tunnel hoop houses heated up so fast may be for the opaque plastic I was using. Hmmm,Interesting. I have to think more on what you said.
a look at the plastic I used  last winter

I really wanted to be able to see those plant colors when I came out the house or when I drove up to the house or out in the yard. I guess I want my cake and eat it too.

haas, did you click on the informational links I posted?

I am curious, are you planning on experiencing cold temperatures? Is this the reason for the hoop plastic? Are you trying to extend the season?

You know a low hoop house heats faster, smaller volume to heat up.
Lightly opaque greenhouse film does a fine job getting light to the plants, it has been thoroughly field tested.
If what you want is see through plastic film look for storm window vinyl film.

Post  boffer Tue Nov 12, 2013 5:04 pm

I originally covered my hoop houses with 6 mil 'clear' plastic from the big box stores.  In less than a year, the plastic was nearly opaque white.  After three years, the plastic started getting brittle and cracking/breaking here and there, and I started to replace the plastic as it deteriorated.

Two year ago, I made a greenhouse and covered it with clear greenhouse plastic from Farmtek.  It's not clear as glass, but I can identify plants and people when looking through it.
https://www.farmtek.com/farm/supplies/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&productId=358910&pageId=ItemDetail&isDoc=N

It's still clear as new, and just as supple.  I too like being able to see through the plastic, so I'm using it to replace the plastic on my hoop houses when it's time.  It costs twice as much as the big box plastic, but it should last more than twice as long.  The 'warranty' is four years, and it may last longer in my climate because the sun isn't as intense as in other regions.

Hoop houses heat up fast when the sun strikes them.  If there's any chance of the sun shining during the day, open them up.  It's really gut wrenching to come home at the end of the day to find a box full of dead plants due to excessive heat from being closed up.

My greenhouse is 10x20 with a 10 foot peak height.  I've watched the temp go from the low forties to 90° in 30 minutes when the sun first hits it in the morning.

Someone asked about the product I purchased. It is a 6 mil. clear product from The Greenhouse Mega Store. 4 year warranty on the fabric, almost any size you would want. I have made provisions for a automatic window vent and a manual vent at the bottom, opposite the door.

Side view.

Thanks appplegate ( alias watergate, 007:-) I couldn't resist ), Boffer, turan and camprn for great info.
Camprn, yes, This is why I had food thru last winter, but it was not a user friendly experiment. Somewhat Like Audrey experience.
I went to those sites and found great products for the greenhouse plastic,  I know I could get it, but not now when I'm experimenting. it's was not cost effective. I had used the plastic from uline for about 65.00, but it mot clear and very opague. It held up find and I still have it, ready to use. It just that I have these ideas in my head and heart that there is a better way, minimal time to take care of the plants in the winter and low cost. The plastic would cost about 180.00-200.00 to purchase 1200 sq ft. That what I got from uline for 65.00, I beleive. So I'm looking under every stone in attempt to find a clear to almost clear plastic. I'm going to look at what applegate and boffer are using. Also turan suggestion-"storm window vinyl film."

It such a joy to feast your eyes immediately on your plants and to be able to see at a glance if something is wrong when you can see thru the fabric easily.

Our first hard freeze is happening now. It 27 degrees and will hit 24 degrees at 6:00 AM. I didn't get a chance to cover my plants, so I will probably be set back a little, maybe a lot. I thought it was going to be a light freeze for my area, but I misunderstood the news.

Applegate thanks for sharing those pictures.

Here's an outside view, with a couple of Daikon radishes I just pulled.
