Oh yes, THIS is why I SFG!
I'm on vacation this week, so working in the garden is at the top of the list (and it's warm. and sunny. Yay.)
My project for today is digging up the old bed in front of the house so I can plant something more attractive than dead leaves when the tulips are finished (which is any day now).
We live in a house built about 1870, and I'd be willing to bet that I'm the first one to brave those beds since indoor plumbing was a novel idea in this neighborhood. It's hard, and sandy, and compressed to the consistency of concrete.
I'd give up and go to the grocery if I had to deal with a plot big enough to grow vegetables in with traditional row gardening...even my son commented at how much nicer and fluffier the dirt in our box is than this stuff.
(and before anyone asks -- because it's an old house, and an old neighborhood, I do need to at least try to keep within the visual style.)

I second CP's post. I'm visualizing SFG boxes with wrought iron railings so they 'fit in'!
Re: Oh yes, THIS is why I SFG!
my, you all have a lot of faith in me.
I'll post pictures when it's a little more to look at than lumps of hard dirt, chunks of local rock, and a lot of ivy that's run amok.
With any luck, I won't even be face down in the middle of it before it's finished.
