Re: Peat Moss as Preservative
Sphagnum peat moss is safe but easily confused with another product call peat moss. There is much confusion out there.
This article covers more than what you asked for but still answers your question too. I thought it was a great educational piece. Don't be thrown off by the headline, sporotrichosis.

Preservation happens in peat bogs, very wet places. The SFG is not a bog. Sphagnum peat is a good material for use in the SFG, along with a compost blend.

This is not the first time I heard this about the antimicrobial qualities of peat moss.

Re: Peat Moss as Preservative
The link posted in the original post has no supporting documentation. Do you have a link to information about this regarding use in a garden? If not, I consider this a rumor. I have found some studies done regarding antiseptic qualities of various lichens/mosses in bacteria on a human host. These studies were carried out as medical research, not agricultural research.jjocsak wrote:This is not the first time I heard this about the antimicrobial qualities of peat moss.

Re: Peat Moss as Preservative
I'm not trying to start any rumors just trying to get the facts.
Does this help?
Spagnum
The 6th section down mentions antimicrobial properties.
Maybe this doesn't affect the garden though.

Thanks for the link. I think the anti microbial qualities mentioned are in relation to human use and are nothing to worry about in the garden.jjocsak wrote:I'm not trying to start any rumors just trying to get the facts.
