I would appreciate any visual aid for trellising my melons. My space is 2'x2' with farm fence on the back. I would like to plant 2 cantaloupes and 2 sugar babies. Not sure how to support them from the front of the bed to the fence as they will not all be planted at the back. I thought of making some kind of fence panel arch/bridge for them to climb across until they can reach the fence.

ARRGGHH! just when you think you had it all figured out!

I didn't know about the cross-pollination issue with cukes/squash and need to scoot things down a couple of squares (but that will resolve my space issue for a couple more vining tomatoes that I need space for as Lowe's had a buy 1 get 1 free that I just couldn't pass up) Visuals needed for trellising melons... Icon_biggrin Love those maters!

Cross pollination is only a problem if you are going to be keeping the seeds to plant next year. If not, then no worry at intermingling the plants.

Usually melons take up 2 squares, so in order to plant 4 plants, you'd need 8 square feet, hopefully all in a row so you'd also have 8' of trellis (or fencing). Remember, it's the top growth that needs the room. Can you put another 2x2' bed next to the one one you already have? If not, then I'm afraid you'll only be able to grow one of each in the space you have and even then unless they can spread out on either side, they will be crowded.

Thanks for clarifying the cross-pollination issue.

I need to revise my measurements. I stated the space was 2'x2', its actually 2'x4' with a trellis along the back. I would post a diagram but it is on Microsoft Works spreadsheet, when I tried to post it, it would not accept my file type.

Here's a previous post by Chok that may be able to help!
"my reccomendation would be to host it somewhere like rapidshare or megauploads and then post the link in the forums so that others can download it im pretty sure if its a small enough file that there is no charge for the hosting and if any one needs a walkthrough on how to download from these types of sites hit me up because i do alot of downloading from both of them."

If your garden is along a fence and you have fence space on each side, you might try just putting all four in a row and training the outer two away from the garden a bit. That would give more room in the center for the other two. I did something similar in that my beds are 3' wide but I used 4' wire mesh for the trellis. That way I can plant each square since I have more upper room. (hope that made sense)

Hi Rebecca,

They have to be in an image format which includes: bmp - .png - .jpg - .gif - .tif. I don't recall if Works can do the conversion.

Thanks CP, that's pretty straight foward.

Here's one back at ya that I'm in love with, but it only works in a browser. It is so sweet that I actually spent money to upgrade from the freeware version!

I just posted this on another thread topic. maybe something like this would work...with some adjustments. I'm going to try and sketch out what I am wanting... so the DH can build it. "Oh honey...I have something else I need you to build for the SFG..." Smile
