Hi everyone!

Does anyone here have experiences with white asparagus? It's the variety that needs earthing up or so it is done in conventional gardening.

I was thinking of building a box with white asparagus (it's our favourit variety) but I have no idea if it will work in SFG box, especially with respect to the height.

Any recommendations? Or experiences?

Thank you so much in advance for your insights Smile

Greetings from flooded Germany

A top hat box(like for potatoes) would do fine. Add this in the spring, remove when you stop picking and let the ferns grow.  Wait til the spears start coming up, add the box on top of bed. Fill with something light, that you can easily stick your hand in down to the dirt/MM. Perlite, vermiculite, finely crushed up leaves. Something that  won't hold lots of water, and that you can store easily til next season.
The idea is to stop all light from getting to spears.
When the spears peek thru, stick your hand in down to your dirt/MM and snap off the spear at dirt level, don't try to cut or you may damage the plant.  After you have picked for the season, and need to let the ferns grow, gather the loose material, put in a bag or container of some sort, let dry well, and store til next time. You can then remove the top hat boxes.
Don't leave the loose material on, for it will make the asparagus plants too deep to grow well.
Let us know how it goes, pics are always wanted!
