Potatoes - Newly planted sweet potatoes and frost?? Empty Newly planted sweet potatoes and frost??

Post  SalsaMom 5/12/2013, 7:20 pm

Hopefully I can get an answer quickly.
I have two 4x4 squares planted with sweet potatoes. Been out about a week. We have a frost advisory tonight - lows in the 30s....
Do I need to cover them? Can I use an old King size sheet over them?
Anything else I can put over them that 's easy and I might have around the house?

Thanks!

Cover with what you have for tonight, sheet, towels, blanket, etc. Then, tomm. get maybe some clear/opaque plastic to cover bed. It can be just thrown over. put some small stakes, cloths hangers skewed into a sort of circle, something to sort of raise the plastic off the plants some. you don't have to remove til the ground is at least 70 deg. Sweet potatoes like it hot.

Thanks - I just went out and got sheets over the two beds - found some rebar that we hadn't used - it worked ok to keep the sheets up off the plants and then put some stuff around the parts on the ground to keep it from flying off. I never would have thought that I'd have to cover ANY crop in middle TN in mid-May! This weather is weird - not at all what we should be having - should be warmer. Oh well. At least the spuds are covered. Glad I was slack and haven't set my tomatoes out yet! They are in the garage for tonight and maybe tomorrow night too.

White potatoes are different, they like the cool. You can go ahead and plant them. They are a cool weather plant in hot parts of the country.
