:?: :?: I was glancing through the forum the other day, and saw that someone was planting potatoes in old used tires. I can not find it again so I can get more information on it. If anyone knows how to do this, please let me know. I am curious and want to see if there is other ways to grow potatoes. Thanks to all who will lend a helping hand.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. I can't find the thread you're referring to (I saw it too), but the concept of using tires falls within the realm of growing potatoes in some type of 'tower' in order to maximize harvest for square feet used. If you do a search for 'garbage can potatoes' or 'potato tire towers' or 'sfg high rises', you'll find lots of ideas to get you started.

Here is a youtube on tire potatoes there are several others at www.youtube.com. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmJQ2q5tUhc
I dont like the junk yard aspect of tires at several levels so grow mine in 18 gal plastic planters, sweet potatoes can be grown this way also. My planters are about 2’ high and I topped the compost and peat moss mixture off a couple times and potatoes seem to be growing quite well from top to bottom in the planters. It seems like many who used potato grow boxes this season had less than resounding success. Youtube is my go to starting place for almost every thing I need to learn more about..

I would be very concerned about the tires breaking down and contaminating the soil. Not only do they spend their lives riding through petroleum pollutants, they are made from petroleum themselves. Yuck.

Yeah, I've seen it a number of places, I'm actually going with potatoe bags from the UK, I've seen tires used but would be a little concerned about the leakage of anything from them into the soil.
