I mulch in between my boxes. I went out this weekend to check on my lettuce I planted from seed. I was walking between the boxes when I almost stepped on six lettuce plants about 3 inches high! Needless to say I left them and will be enjoying lettuce a little sooner than I thought! They must have seeded out from last year.

Last year, I had volunteer basil take over between my boxes. It loved the mulch and I love basil.

I had the same thing happen to me last year - found red oak leaf lettuce in among my irises! Don't you just love these kinds of garden surprises?!

I've got sunflowers popping up all over the area between my boxes this year, I still haven't managed to make myself yank them out yet. And ohy the marigolds... MUST remember to remove flower heads before they dry out and seed the entire area! I've been picking marigold seedlings out of the beds daily. I have left a small few that pop up near the edges though.

I found a tomato seedling growing between my dripper main line and the outside of the bed (concrete block).

Color me surprised, especially since I didn't direct-seed my tomatoes, so I have NO idea how a seed got out there, and then how it decided to make a go of it in gravel and horrible alkali desert fill dirt.

Also found a carrot seedling in a similar spot on a different side of the same bed. That one is no biggie...obviously I dropped a carrot seed.

Still not sure what they're gonna do in gravel though...

I think my sunflower plant can take me in a fair fight...it's taller than me, and it keeps giving me dirty looks. Shocked

perhaps the strangers were flicked out the beds by the birds perhaps or in your case lizards , or taken for a walk by big ants etc. etc.
