Johnny's 512 Question
Can't find the answer to this--
If seedlings die or don't germinate at all, can the same Johnny's 512 soil mix be re-used? I was thinking of mixing it up with a bunch of fresh mix. Good idea or bad idea?
Thanks, LM

Re: Johnny's 512 Question
My first question is what is it that caused the demise of the seedlings and what didn't germinate?

Re: Johnny's 512 Question
Got a handfull or so of empty 3/4" blocks sitting around from weeks ago, they're all mixed together now. Flowers, herbs, veggies like cosmos, parsley, brassicas. When they didn't grow at all or dampened off I tossed them aside. Not knowing what's what anymore, maybe throw it all away camp?

Re: Johnny's 512 Question
Well, pitch it into the compost pile and start over is the safest course.

Re: Johnny's 512 Question
I guess I'm just frugal, but when mine don't germinate, I figure I've not misted enuf (sometimes I forget) or the seeds were just duds since I've been using some that are years old. I put them in a container and when they are completely dried out so no long-forgotten seeds germinate in the new batch, I toss them in the mixing container, wet them, and incorporate them into my new batch of mix. They don't seem to matter with the next batch. I get good germination if I've been careful of the moisture content. I can't think the failures were from disease being started in a basement furnace room away from outdoor soils......but age of seeds or something stupid on my part.
