Last fall I planted my 4' x 4' bed with 20 garlic cloves. Can I plant other things around them? My garlic planting instructions said garlic doesn't compete well with weeds. If it's a crowding issue maybe I don't want to plant lets say radishes or lettuce around it?

I have beets, carrots and lettuce seeds planted in the empty squares of my garlic bed. But I read that beans, cabbage, peas and strawberries don't go well with them.

I've been collecting companion info from different sources.
Sorry my info does not mention any issues of garlic with radishes or lettuce. Should be ok unless someone else shares their experience.

But in case it helps I'll share what I've collected so far from reading, not actual experience: Garlic grows well around cabbage, cane fruits, fruit trees, roses, tomatoes. Garlic does not like to be around aromatic herbs, also it inhibits the growth of beans and peas. Garlic doesn't like potatoes, yet another source says garlic tea helps repel late potato blight.

I do keep my garlic away from my beans and peas, I take a step further and try to keep all of my alliums (garlic, leeks, onions) away from all of my legumes. As I use my garlic as an anti pest measure, and my beans for soil improvement, this makes planting a little tricky sometimes. If I need them close together, I will sometimes put a band of something else between them, anything from peppers to french marigolds, to swiss chard or a combination of such.

Certainly I do have garlic planted heavily around my roses. I am also the only person on the block that does not have Japanese beetles chewing on their roses. It has also seemed to deter slugs to some degree, I think you would need an allium forest around and through things for it to be a complete preventative.

I have never had much trouble with garlic having a hard time competing with other plants. I have some garlic that established itself quite thoroughly when I was sick. It has beat back the likes of dandelion, chicory, and portulaca to make fine big clumps. This will be my first year back in the garden since 2010.

I think a distinction needs to be made here.
*Companion planting speaks to benefits of each plant to another.

**When planting garlic amongst other crops, it is usually as a pest repellent.

***If you are growing the garlic in a bed as a crop, it may not yield nice big bulbs if it is competing with other plants for nutrients from the soil.
