I just put a plywood bottom on my sfg today and want to drill the drainage holes. In the new book it say's 1/4" holes, one every square foot and an extra in each corner but the picture shows what looks like more than that. Any ideas on an optimal number and if a larger size holes might be better or not? jjc

I have two quarter inch holes per square and one in each corner in a 1 year old table top strawberry bed. So far it drains just fine. Made the bed 8 inches deep to help compensate for over 12hrs daily sunshine and hoped to water once a day. It seemed to work fine in spite of myself not following exact by the book directions. Drainage and moisture retention was sufficient for lush growth and once a day watering.

I found that 1/4 inch wasn't enough so I made mine 1/2 inch and laid weed cloth in the bed.

I'm just about ready to drill the holes saw this thread and wonder idf someone could answer this for me.

I know the layout isn't that good but say it's an 2 ft x 3 ft sfg - in the center where the X is put one drill hole (I understand that from the book)- now here you see the O is that where you drill the holes when it says the corners? OR does it mean a corner within one of the square foots? Does anyone have a link of a diagram showing where the drill holes go?

The X's keep on bunching up they should line up with the above dashes

O-----------------/-----------------/----------------O
/ X / X / X /
/------------------/----------------/----------------/
/ X / X / X /
O------------------/---------------/-----------------O

Your 4 outside corner drainage holes are correct as you described. In addition, you should have a drainage hole in the center of each of the 6 squares in your 2 by 3ft. box for a total of 10 holes.
