I have a plywood bottom on my boxes with one hole per square foot. I know my mix is off with too much peat moss so it holds too much water (I plan on fixing this today) but has anyone had problems with their box with a bottom not draining well with only 1 hole per square foot?

No.

Is there a particular problem you're concerned about?

I just wanted to make sure 1 hole per square foot is sufficient becuause I will be taking all my soil out and would be easier to drill some more before adding my soil back.

I believe Mel recommends one 1/4 hole per square and one for good measure in the corners.

Personally, I drill a few extra on the low side. I don't worry about getting the box perfectly level because it's not going to stay that way! Set your box, turn the hose on in it, see where the water goes-drill a few extra holes there.

Hi J,

We're finishing up a 2x4 TT today. We're putting a 3/4" hole in each corner of the box. I have another box with the smaller holes in the corners. I've had no problem with that one but just thought we'd try the bigger holes for this one. No particular reason. I noticed others (or someone else) has done this too.

I line the boxes with weed cloth so the dirt doesn't fall out.
