I live in hot south Louisiana and my beds will get full sun all day. Instead on planting indeterminate tomatoes on the north side I was considering planting a row on the west side instead to block some late sun. Any thoughts on this rationale?

That could work well for nearby crops that need a bit more shade in the afternoon, but it won't help your tomatoes which will stop producing when it reaches 90F or so. They can't take the heat either. Maybe an old beach umbrella can help the tomatoes.

I actually have a 4x8 bed with trellises in an L shape, on the north side 4' and on about 6' of the west side. My tom are mostly on the west side. I try to up with the pruning at least til fall which allows some filtered afternoon sun. The rear of the bed at various times has onions, carrots. lettuce, peppers. beans, corn, etc and all seem to do fine here in So CA where is gets very hot.

As much sun we get in LA during the summer months you should have no issues. You may want to make a sun shade during July and Aug for the evening sun. My tomatoes do do so well during the hottest Summer months due to heat.

And Hello from a fellow LA SFGer !

As long as they get the 6-8 hours of sun, that will be fine. I plant in the shade of tomatoes all the time. I think my biggest worry for summer veggies is proper spacing for air circulation.

I am think about planting another row of toms about 3-6 weeks later than the first ones in the row just south and adjacent to the other ones in the same square.

Any thoughts?
