Monthly Avatar Theme For November: Compost!
The monthly avatar theme for November is compost! It can be anything compost related. Finished, building or starting your pile. Your composter, worms, castings, scrapes, hottie status, pooh or leaves. Perhaps even your stinky piles of grass clippings. Maybe kitchen compost container. You name it! Have fun, and show off your compost
Here's my kitchen compost container:

Here is my homemade tumbler. I will try to get an updated pic with the standing storage barrel next to it soon.

Re: Monthly Avatar Theme For November: Compost!
Half a truck load of goat/horse manure/bedding. Added to my dried grass, some leaves and stuff that didn't finish composting last year to make up 3 piles.
I can't believe the angle of the picture eliminated the truck except the tailgate. Weird.

Thanks! I am vertically challenged, so the closer things are built to the ground, the better for me! Also, just plain cheap - used what I had on hand (short wood scraps).

Re: Monthly Avatar Theme For November: Compost!
Here is our compost area which we started back in July. It's gotten pretty full since then but I'm too cold right now to go out and take a new pic. We are considering restarting them over in the spring but we haven't really come to a decision yet. We noticed that we have a lot of weeds growing in them and don't want to put that into the spring beds.

Oh goodie! Fave rave topic!
We're at peak fall color here on Cape Cod so my leaves are falling little by slow. I've been working on my pile all this week after saving up a pile of 'greens' for months.
This photo is from the beginning of Oct. The 'greens' pile is on the right and the pile on the left is the finished pile started last year that I've been using this year. The big empty space in the back corner is just waiting for some leaves to fall:
This photo is from today. Notice the seaweed that I collected today on top of the 'greens' pile, thanks to Sandy:
The new pile is a mixture of mowed leaves, 'greens' and seaweed:
I even added some of that seaweed to the finished pile since it dissolves so quickly. Can't hurt, right?
Long way to go yet on the Cape, but ain't this fun!?!?

Oh nice, Rose! That 3rd year bin is a long one. How do you turn the back of it when it's full?
I have worms just like that in my greens pile. Earlier on I used some shredded paper from the office for the first time just to keep the greens from getting smelly, and apparently worms LOVE that stuff. Each blob of paper was a mass of worms exactly like your photo. What a surprise that was!

Re: Monthly Avatar Theme For November: Compost!
They could probably make some $ selling all those worms!
Re: Monthly Avatar Theme For November: Compost!
Lovely picture Icemaiden.
You can get volumes of worms like that by putting dung manure in the bin and turning it when you have a decent number of worms in it .. they then lay eggs through out the pile and hatch if it is in a nice warm location . On the side to the warmth providing it does not get too hot you will get masses and masses of the worms .
I thought I had a lot in my bins but that picture puts mine to shame .
Still you can freeze them and feed them to the chooks a few at a time ..the chuckie eggs will taste fab .

Re: Monthly Avatar Theme For November: Compost!
Spoke w/ a couple managers at the local Home Depot. They very nicely indulged my request for free pallets. Learned they use 5 grades of pallets. The stronger ones used for bricks and cinder blocks I could not have, but the other ones I could. Consider this my deal of the day! Nice young fellow loaded them into the van. It's pretty nice to add on or replace pallets as needed without driving and scrounging around like before. As soon as this cold, sore throat and headache goes away I need to be outside asap and play composting girl again...

Do you think they are a different kind of worm than we have in the States? I would love to have masses of worms! My composting would be on the fast track if I had lots of worms!

Lucky you. My Home Depot wouldn't give up on any pallets.

If we put grass clippings into our compost pile now, how do we keep grass from growing in the beds if we put it in next spring?

Re: Monthly Avatar Theme For November: Compost!
How tall was the grass when you cut it? If the grass plants didn't go to seed before cutting there should not be a problem. If there are seeds, you will want to get a hot pile of compost going. Sustained temperatures above 130F will kill off most viable seeds.gregrenee88 wrote:If we put grass clippings into our compost pile now, how do we keep grass from growing in the beds if we put it in next spring?
