From Cornell U. It seems this downy mildew will overwinter. Sad

Camp, when I clicked on your link I got "File damaged and could not be repaired". Maybe the mildew leaked into it?

We did not get hit by this, but a neighbor 3 houses down lost all her impatiens. But she buys her impatiens from off Cape in spring. We buy local.

I just fixed the link. Try it again and let me know if it works for you. If not, cut and paste the web address into your browsers address window. That sould get you to the fact sheet.

Nope, still couldn't get it to work, not even with copy & paste. Must be my old puter. I'll get it thru google or whatever.

Does it work for you? If not, I'm here for a bit if you want me to keep testing it.

I'm using Firefox. *shrug* The new link works fine. Thanks for that. I need to study up on it to figure out if it's going to travel down the street, in which case I won't even bother with the impatiens next spring.

I tried annual vinca this year, since the flowers look about identical to impatiens, and it was on sale. After sprinkling it with cayenne pepper to deter bunnies I think, it was fantastic! Still blooming like crazy now while the impatiens has given up the ghost with our cold nights.

Heading off into Saturday. Thanks for all that you do, Camp!

Iowa has now had confirmed impatien downy mildew. They even used it for an unanswerable question in our Diagnostics class I took for my MG continuing education. In June there were no confirmed cases, by August there were.

"If you suspect downy mildew on your impatiens or find fuzzy growth on leaf undersides, bag and remove the plants immediately. To reduce the risk of infection, avoid overcrowding and promote air circulation among plants. Also, avoid overhead irrigation and watering at night." By Erika Saalau, Plant & Insect Diagnostic Clinic, ISU Entomology article.

I am just gutted that they say winter temperatures will not take care of this. I have many old shade trees in my yard and I LOVE my impatiens. sobbing potato - Impatiens Downy Mildew warning 136416910

Post  Patty from Yorktown 9/29/2012, 10:08 pm

I am in the same boat as you with a shady backyard, and formerly beautiful Impatients. Around here if I baby them, they will last until late December some years. Some of my plants were purchased and some planted from seed and some are volunteers. We have had a very wet summer and all of the plants have been pulled. Thankfully I decided to try Coleus this year for something different. So the damage is not as bad as it could have been. I think next summer will be a coleus year as well. Good luck

potato - Impatiens Downy Mildew warning Empty no impatiens and sweet potato ban

Post  walshevak 5/1/2013, 11:16 pm

None of the garden centers in the Wilmington, NC area are carrying impatiens this year. They are pushing begonias, caladiums and coleus for the shade garden. And the is a ban on growing sweet potatoes on the barrier island beach areas this year. An insect/beetle of some kind is the problem.

CC would you please post a link to information about these wallflowers. I have no idea what you mean by that.
