strawberries - Strawberries? Empty Strawberries?

Post  littlesapphire 4/13/2010, 8:59 am

I bought a package of strawberry plants last week, and I really want to put them in the ground. The SFG book says to plant strawberries as soon as the ground is workable, and with the crazy weather we've had this year (it was in the 80s a week ago), I'm gonna say the ground is workable. But I just am afraid to put them outside too early. I'm in upstate NY, and although it was in the 80s a week ago, it's chilled down and has been in the 50s for the last few days.

Although strawberries are tough little buggers in the winter, they will not like a frost after they have started growing. I think if you plant them and cover them if it seems cold, they'll be fine. If you got the plants that look like dead little strings, I would definitely plant them. The first time I bought those, I thought I had been deceived, but those plants are still here!

What kind of strawberries did you get?

I would plant them and cover them with row cover or even blankets and towels whenever the forecast is for near 32 degree nites.

You might try those 2 liter bottle cloches while the weather adjusts - leave off the cap and cut off the bottom and slip them over the plant.

I'm further north but my strawberries have been out growing on their just fine since the snow left in March (very unusually early). They seem to be fairly tough and have been fine even with the occassional frost. They started growing on their own several weeks ago. I haven't been covering them.

I'd say to go for it. They seem to be pretty tough!

I have no idea which type of strawberries I ended up planting, I got 30 plants for $5 and they were gorgeous healthy plants, so I wasn't to worried about specifics. They are doing really well (I think).

here is a week or 2 after we planted

And here is a few days ago (all the plants have this type of growth to them)

I stand corrected - we have had a few frosts in the last two weeks, and both my established and brand new strawberries are perfectly fine!

Yep! They are the same ones as pictured earlier in this thread. (The white planter in the background has mature, "regular" strawberries that I received as a gift earlier this spring.)

Hey, I know I started it, but don't you go giving yourself a hard time - I won't have it!

Any companion planting is good companion planting. You should see some of my attempts - marigolds totally covered over by their neighbors - and the basil I planted with my tomatoes? Can't find 'em! They are buried in the jungle.
