well, I made a mistake and planted nasturtiums in my SFG's - they usually prefer poor soil in order to bloom. So I planted more in poor soil - okay, apparently really, really poor soil - they never germinated!

Guess that explains why I only got one bloom from 3 plants!! They are in my SFG. I got two from seed (after several re-seeding attempts) and bought one start. One of them from seed has some lovely foliage... can't wait to munch on it.

One thing I did learn about nasturtiums is you have to rough up the seed a bit with a nail file to aid in germination.

I started Nasturtuims from seed in one corner of each of my beds and did NOT scratch the seed. I just covered them over with good soil. I think they can survive bad soil, but the like good soil as well.

They are doing well here on June 23rd and were sown April 2nd.

Well, Quiltbea, I stand corrected. I now need a new excuse for my poor nasturtium results.

Megan, I do not wish to discourage you - or maybe you mean you can't wait to munch on this year's blossoms- I don't like nasturtiums. To me they are too peppery. But I love pansies! They range from bland to a little peppery - but most of them have the flavor I couldn't identify until one of our employees told me - some of the colors taste like teaberry!

I've eaten nasturtium leaves and blossoms before. They are very peppery, but I like them when mixed in with more tender, sweeter salad greens. I haven't tried pansies, though.... never had any not from a box store, and I didn't trust them for chemicals, etc. But what is teaberry?

No. I only know the word as the name for a wood stain.

well, I'm thinking if you started gnawing on a piece of wood, you might not be too impressed with the flavor, but try a pansy - the flavor is subtle - all the flavor is in the finish- a little sweet - and the part that isn't sweet is teaberry. (Kind of like telling you how to carve a dog out of a piece of wood - take a piece of wood, then take everything away that doesn't look like a dog!)

In my experience, the white ones are kind of bland, the yellow ones a little peppery, and any of the red, pink or purple ones are yummy.
