Many types of bees in my daughters wildflower garden. All pictures taken this last week. Her garden is about 100 ft from mine.

Awesome pics! I love bees. In fact my wife and I are stopping by an apiary in the morning on our way to the beach. It is one of the few that produce pure tupelo honey (our absolute favorite - and much different than your typical honey).

Also, My neighbor spends a great deal of effort to keep his lawn maintained with all kinds of treatments. His grass looks nice, however, I much prefer my clover yard with hints of grass. I took several years of tedious neglect to get it this way and the bees seem to appreciate it. Wink

One year ago there were no bees to be found around here. This year they are very abundant but many of them are much darker and not quite as many of the traditional honey bees. Wondering what has brought on this change in the bee scape.

A lot of the insects survived the mild winter and are doing well this Spring. The native pollinators included. Very Happy

That sweet bee is amazingly beautiful...like a piece of jewelry! Great pics - thanks for posting them.

We have lots of bumble bees here. They are great pollinators. And when the sedum hedge flowers in the fall, all kinds of different bees congregate on them. It's like they're having a huge party. When I mow under and along the hedge, I try to be careful not to upset them.

Not so many last fall for some reason:
lng horned bees - Bees, bees & more bees 100_4810

Maybe I can get a better photo of the 'party' this fall. lng horned bees - Bees, bees & more bees 3170584802

I think it was Rooster who recently posted an article from Mother Earth news about natural pesticides ETC.
It covered a lot of territory, but one tip they gave in the article was for people with allergies (hay fever) to eat honey that grown (Rolling Eyes ) Close to where you live, it apparently decreases your symptoms.
So all you bee keepers out there be sure to share with your sneezy friends Very Happy

Yes, I've heard that, too, GWN. The office where I work actually buys local honey for us every spring since Cape Cod is loaded with allergens. We put it in our coffee and/or tea or just eat if off a spoon at least once a day and it really seems to work.

Eating it raw is the best. Once you put it in tea the heat alters the the honey and destroys the enzymes, or so I hear.

the scientist in me, trying to find out WHY that would help allergies, am thinking that perhaps exposing the body to the allergen, orally, perhaps might have some sort of desensitization role.

Yup, that's exactly it! It's like a vaccine, or the immunotherapy shots that some people get, say, for pet allergies. I have known about the idea for so long, I can't even remember where I first learned it: a doctor (most of my family has asthma and/or allergies), book, magazine article. But I just did a search, (the researcher in me, I guess) and found this: http://health.howstuffworks.com/diseases-conditions/allergies/allergy-treatments/local-honey-for-allergies2.htm which includes this:

I love honey but don't really know how to use it. I will have to get some honey from our local farmers' market. If it crystalizes will it still work? We have plenty of allergies at my home. I could easily eat a spoonful of honey every day! Yum!
