Use your thinned out carrots and beets

This is more for the benefit of new sf gardeners-- no matter how hard I try I plant more carrot seeds then what is intended. When you have to thin carrots you can easily transplant the tiny ones somewhere else. I've done it with babies not even an inch tall and others over 2 inches tall. Water them first so they pull out easy. Water the new location, poke a hole and drop it in so the entire root stretches down the hole. Firm the wet soil around so it stands up nicely. Works every time. Beets will transplant too. They look sad at first but they bounce back most of the time. There is probably a small bit of space somewhere for these little veggies! Wink

good tip. I've also had luck with using a teaspoon to scoop out all of the tiny plants, dip them in a cup of water, and all of the soil comes off. Untangle the tiny roots, and re plant! It works MOST of the time also Smile

whenever i transplant carrots or daikon, i form the roots into interesting shapes. we call them root sculptures. they are always a surprise when we pull them because they sometimes grow in a new direction.
