Hi! Is anyone here living on or near the Navajo Reservation?
We (our church mission team) are driving out this summer. A large part of what we do is teach sustainability through SFG. We will be meeting with some of the Navajo Elders for workshops this year. We also have plans to install several wells to communities who have no water. At these new water sources, we plan place the community gardens.
I would value the advice of local SFG'rs. Thanks!

I am curious, are you teaching raised beds? Or sunken beds?
The Hopi have a tradition of waffle gardens, I do not know if the Navajo followed that, but it is something suited to the enviroment. Possibly better suited than a raised bed.
Just being curious. All the best in your efforts.

We are doing raised beds. Last year was our first year, it went well.
We did deepen the box to 8 inches on Mel's recommendation, and we also used straw to hold in moisture, and of course shade cloth became necessary some places.

You'll be in a beautiful part of Arizona! Too bad none of us regulars live near there (it's about 3-3 1/2 hrs drive for Phoenicians). If you drive a little further west I can suggest some fun places to visit. =)

Davana that is wonderful you are going to teach sfg and dig wells. It irritates me to no end that the people on the reservations have so little, so I am so pleased to read your post. Living in Utah I have talked to people who have lived on the reservation and I worked for an attorney that used to represent the reservation. Keep up the good work!
