Plywood Bottoms? Empty Plywood Bottoms?

Post  Prestermatt 4/8/2010, 10:29 pm

Hey all,

This is my first post here. I've been reading the forums for several weeks now and have been meaning to post in the Welcome Mat, but as I could use some construction help, I figured I'd post here first.

I'm hoping to do a couple of boxes on my patio this spring, and I was wondering what you all do for the plywood bottoms. I understand plywood comes in 4x8 sheets. If I do a 4x4 box with rotated corners, as Mel suggests, the width will be more than 4'. So the plywood won't overlap the whole bottom of the frame. Is this okay? Do I need a wider piece of plywood, cut to fit the frame? I'm concerned that the 3/4" or so overlap wouldn't be enough to hold it together properly. Does that make sense? Any recommendations on what to use to attach the plywood to the box?

Thanks for your help!

Matt

Why not trim down the length of your box sides so the OUTSIDE measure is 4'.... after all, Mel says that it's not so important to be precise with the 1' squares (which would be a little short anyway.)

glad you\'re here

To fit a half sheet of plywood properly, you would have to cut each box board to 46.5 inches. I use #8 1 1/2 inch screws spaced 6-8 inches, galvanized if possible.

Matt... Boffer's measurement is using two-by lumber... if using one-by, cut the length to 47-1/4
