Whether or not to cover plywood bottoms? Empty Whether or not to cover plywood bottoms?

Post  Bobbi 3/21/2014, 4:02 pm

We have recently made new SFG boxes to replace our old ones that had rotted.  I had lined the old boxes with a thin landscape liner thinking that might help the plywood last longer. However, I have recently read that moisture can get trapped between the liner and plywood causing the plywood bottom to wear out sooner. My sweet potato roots also grew into the fabric and some small tubers also grew under the cloth. My boxes are raised and sit on cinder blocks. Do any of you have an opinion on whether or not the liner would improve the longevity of the plywood or am I just adding an additional moisture problem?
Thanks.

Whether or not to cover plywood bottoms? Empty no more plywood

home depot has barn board 16' to make planks for bottom. lasts longer. put screen down if you have gaps. the boards are also a lot cheaper than plywood and no gluey chemicals.

Thanks, Big Larry. Since we have already made the boxes, I will keep your barn board idea for new boxes or replacements.
