plywood - is it needed? Empty plywood - is it needed?

Post  jenny-h on 3/14/2010, 12:51 pm

Do I need to use plywood under my garden? Or is that mainly if I were creating a tabletop garden? I know this sounds like a stupid question, but I just wanted to make sure. I am planning on putting in 3 gardens over existing flowerbeds. They will get lots of sun and are easy access. One of the areas is 2x6 feet, 3x18 feet and 5x5 feet. I will put several square foots together to use the entire space. I hope that makes sense. Anywho, I just needed to know if I had to use plywood over these existing flower beds. Thank you.

Hi jenny,

Welcome to the forum. We hope you find that it's a good place to get your questions answered, and that soon, you'll be able to answer some yourself!

Most of us use weedblock fabric, mainly to prevent grass and weeds from growing into our beds, and to keep mel's mix separate from the native soil. Some folks have nasty, tenacious weeds that need extra measures. They use heavy layers of newspaper, cardboard or even plywood to keep the weeds from growing into their boxes. Happy sfg gardening...
