Hmm. Has me wondering if I should culture the garlic instead of curing it. Save enough to replant and use the rest for making a cultured version and keep in the refrigerator. Not only would it be safe from decay but the probiotics would be amazing. Think I might rethink some things.

Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
Curing just means allowing it to dry enough that it wont rot. If you put it in the fridge it may actually rot. Pickled garlic is pretty darned yummy too.greatgranny wrote:camprn wrote:http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/16/never-eaten-fresh-garlic-_n_5589384.html?ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000032

Early Italian Garlic
Hi all,
Quite some time ago I wrote that Early Italian variety softneck garlic is available from Southern Exposure. I'm afraid I got it wrong. They e-mailed confirmation to me today that their Italian softneck is different from Early Italian. My apologies all. Also, my thanks to yolos who picked up it. I already placed my order with Southern Exposure. I've decided not to cancel. I like some of the qualities of the Southern Exposure variety, so I think I'll give this one a whirl.

Forgot to post this before...
I harvested on 6/21 this year, and cured for two months.
Red Inchelium, softneck, heirloom, organically grown (and a little small, but next year's will be bigger!)

I think my sunflower plant can take me in a fair fight...it's taller than me, and it keeps giving me dirty looks.

They may be small but they sure do look healthy.

I agree with granny on looking healthy. That is more important than anything as you plant them this fall. Congrats on a good looking garlic harvest and you will be rewarded next year.

Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
Thanks everyone! I already set aside my six biggest heads for planting this winter. I probably only have maybe half a dozen heads left for me (garlic makes a good gift, lol).

Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
My garlic order came in yesterday. With a name like K's backyard garlic, I had to order it. Need to go to the sheep farmer for some of his 3 yo composted manure to add to the bed I'll use this year. Will plant on Oct 26 or 27 as I leave for Philippines on Oct 28.

I kept this garlic to plant this fall. Anyone know when we plant in So. California? I can't remember when we planted last year. I'm thinking late October or November? I see all different dates on various sites.....southern gardener wrote:welp, we pulled the garlic today!! It's a NICE one!! Here's the pic! I think I could have pulled it a couple of days ago, it split a little on the bottom, but man! Biggest one IVE ever grown for sure!! wahoooo!!!

thank you! pulled it in May, and kept it back for planting per people's advice. Want to plant it at the best time...seems like late October or early November from what I'm hearing. Hope to get some more big ones! This one was 4" acrossMarc Iverson wrote:Wow what a monster!

Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
This year when I plant my garlic bed I want to plant pink tulips among them.
Can anyone think of any drawbacks? I want some "pretties" amongst my veggies.

Would the tulip bulbs steal nourishment from the garlic bulbs?

you'll dig up the tulips when you lift the garlic.Kelejan wrote:This year when I plant my garlic bed I want to plant pink tulips among them.

I will just make sure there are enough nutrients.
Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
In our record-setting spring temps week I did my fall clean-up (5 months late) and found my spring-planted garlic from last year that did virtually zilch, GROWING!!! I carefully made sure to leave them in the boxes as I cleaned out everything else, and hopefully this year I will get me some GARLIQUE!

Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
We stuck garlic in the ground a week ago for the first time ever some in some flowerbeds and a new bed Peggy is putting in to eventually be for shade. I never tried it before for some reason but figured why not. Looked yesterday afternoon and many of them are peeking up after last weeks monsoons. Funny how a lil thing like that can get ya all excited.
Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
And I planted my garlic last October and they are only just peeking through.
Oh, just realised that we went through a cold spell, called winter followed by about a month of no rain or snow.
But I bet my garlic roots are a bit deeper than your's, Cappy.

Re: Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garlic grow?
I planted mine on 10/31/14. These are the garlic as of 02/28/15. I did put row covers over them when the temps dropped below 28*. They were heavily mulched with about 6 inches of wheat straw. In the picture below, I had removed the wheat straw to let the mulch and growing medium dry out a bit after weeks of heavy rain.
I tried two years in a row planting garlic in the spring and my garlic bulbs were very, very small. Hardly bigger than what I planted.
