Hello everyone, glad to be here
I live in Phoenix AZ and hope to learn how to successfully grow veggies even when it's getting hot!

Re: Hello everyone, glad to be here
Welcome! I have a brother that lives in the Phoenix area and he talks about some of his growing issues in such a hot summer climate. I'm sure there are people here with some experiences to share. I live in Wyoming, so I'm still dealing with winter temps here!

and welcome to the Forum.
I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Nice to have you join us. I hope you have had a chance to read ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING. It is a great book and full of simple instructions for having an easy to maintain garden.
I don't have hot weather at all on the Oregon Coast, so I can't really help you with that.
Please feel free to ask questions and let us know how you are progressing.

Re: Hello everyone, glad to be here
I believe there are times in Phoenix when some shade cloth is useful. But on the bright side, you have a pretty long summer season. I found lots of info about my area online with a so cal specific planting chart that I use every month. I am sure someone in Phoenix has done the same for your area.
We do have someone from the AZ desert who has already gone through a season or two so hopefully he will chime in.

Another Az gardener!! woohoo! There are a couple of us regulars from Az that hop on and off. Welcome and don't be shy about posting any questions you might have.
One of the biggest things about gardening here is forget anything you learned anywhere else, it doesn't work here! lol! Right now is the time to get your tomatoes in the ground. They need a bit of a head start to produce before it gets to hot!
Hope to see you around!

Duhh is right. It's a new game here but there are always great opportunities to plan regardless of the time of year. You have a few more months of tomatoes and several of peppers, basil, eggplant, cucumbers, and melons.
Two great guides I use:

you have the heat but at least it's a dry heat you will find alot of help here. If I were you I would check out your local ag. extenction office mine has been very helpful offering all kinds of advice about what to plant and when. They also let us know when the best time to fertilize and spray for insects I say never!!!
