March 2012 in the North East USA
We got snow yesterday, tonight more snow, then freezing rain and sleet and rain and wind and.... Yup it's March!

Re: March 2012 in the North East USA
When I lived in Rockport MA I told myself I just had to get through February and it would be OK. That helped me mentally, but the worse was often yet to come.
Is it too late to plant onion seeds?
Today's 3/8, and I'm wondering if I may have missed indoor onion seed starting. This is my first year with onions and I have several varieties to try. Will they grow okay if they get out to the garden a little late?

Ooh, I like that. And she has on her calendar to start onion seeds March 8th, so pretty funny.

So here I am in Providence RI it was 60 plus yesterday and I am wondering if it might be safe to throw some greens in the garden without covering them. What do my fellow New Englanders think? I also want to plant dandelions this year for my lizards. Any suggestions on some other easy edible flowers with greens? That I could grow from April til Oct or there abouts?

I think I'm going to be a rebel with a bunch of stuff and just put the seeds in and pray for the best. We have had the weirdest winter (if that's what you want to call it), I had some rogue garlic replant itself and I never covered it or protected in any way this winter. It is still doing great! Oregano is already growing, and I'm waiting to see what the sage does. So this year I'm leaving it in the hands of the garden Gods!

I know what you mean Aunti! I am also mindful that we have had snow in May . I am going to take my chances and hopefully plant my peas tomorrow.

Wow - You're planting peas in March? Now this I gotta see. Let us know.
Maybe I'll just stick some garlic bulbs in the soil and see what happens. I think the news is saying 80 degrees for Weds. and Thurs. - how can it possibly get cold again?...

I am so unprepared this year so maybe this will work out for the best LOL I have to get my daughter out there to help with some yard work to prep stuff because I messed my back up. But I will laugh if going all hilly nilly reaps the best reward LOL

Re: March 2012 in the North East USA
It's the last day of Winter and it was 75F outside this afternoon. I let the fire in the house go out. I cleared out those stupid tree root hairs in a 4x4 and planted 4 squares of peas. The skeeters are out and a bat just flew by. AWESOME!

Re: March 2012 in the North East USA
A bat already? Wow. We had an attack of mosquitoes yesterday tho, working outside.
I planted my peas today. Did you cover them with plastic? It's also too late for onions, but I figured - what the heck, I planted some onion seeds and covered with black plastic, at this rate we're going to have a nice long growing season anyway. heh.
Totally weird, but I'm not complaining yet - not unless this keeps up and wreaks havoc.

There is no reason to cover them with plastic. If we have rain they wont get watered; they don't need to heat up either.

Re: March 2012 in the North East USA
The peas I left uncovered, but the onion seeds, direct seeding outdoors, they like 70 degree soil temps I hear... I also hear onion seeds don't keep long - maybe a year, maybe not, so it's a grand experiment.
Bees are coming next month but if I don't finish getting everything assembled and painted, they're going to be homeless! Do you have an electric fence around yours? Locals say it's a must, but I wonder.

I live right in town, taking my chances as I know there are bears less than a mile away, but I have not put up an electric fence yet. Probably wont. Get your hives all set, you really only need the one box with frames for the first few weeks, but you don't want homeless bees. The garden can wait a bit... I'm so excited for you!

Re: March 2012 in the North East USA
A friend in Conn. heard the peepers a week or so ago, so that makes sense.
Like I said, I don't mind this for right now, altho today was just too hot (at least on the seacoast), but if it keeps up it's a little scary.

Re: March 2012 in the North East USA
Sure enough! It's getting to the end of March and the Great Winds have been howling for a while. Now that we are back to seasonal temperatures, my peas are poking through and I had to take the liquid feed off the bee hive; I was afraid it may freeze in the glass jars in the feeder box. Fingers crossed that the temp climbs slowly from here on out so the early Spring blooms are not damaged.
I have finished painting the dining room and now it's time to set up a grow station and sow seeds!

Re: March 2012 in the North East USA
So, it's finally the last day of March. Hooray! The weather has been chilly this week and it's spitting snow right now @ 37F. Yesterday I strung the 2 trellises for the sugar snap peas that are emerging. I also gave the bees a bit more emergency food, it has been too cold for them to fly and they are almost out of honey. Today it will be sowing day indoors: have to replant onions, will try another variety of leek, then will plant 3 varieties tomatoes, poblano peppers, aubergine and some flowers. I may sow some flower seed outside too. Then I will take a nap. I love Saturday naps!

camprn - Isn't it too late to replant onions?
What happened to your first planting?
My peas have not yet emerged. Do they sprout in such chilly weather? Last year I planted them in May outside I believe, this year I planted during our warm spell. I haven't watered them.
I also put 3 baby apple tree grafts outside. We'll see what happens with those.
