December Garden Chores

The bees are all buttoned up tight, but I so wish I had honey from this year.
Most of the spring flowering bulbs are planted.
I still have to break down the trellis systems.
I still have 3 beds that need excavation and weed barrier (shudder) put in the bottom and refilled.
Garlic is all planted and I still have leeks to harvest before the hard freeze.
etc...

I have more clean-up done than I ever have before, and yet...

Most of my bulbs are in. Things that need to be mulched are mulched. I bought a bunch of cheap perennials a month or so again, and I have planted over half of them, which for me is pretty good! (They are ground cover plants - I'm trying to reduce the small areas of lawn at the restaurant.)

BUT....some of my boxes have imitation MM. As I mentioned in another thread, Spring of 2010 my back was in tough shape, so I had to have help mixing and filling my boxes. The person who was "helping" used a lot of composted top-soil, that I had brought in for other purposes! Evil or Very Mad

I really want to get those boxes emptied out before winter, but it sure is hard to work up enthusiasm for that task!

great link Camp !!!

I LOVE the TED talks. Interesting how is name is Pollan (Pollen). The idea that we are just another tool of nature from the plants perspective was interesting. What a great writer and speaker ! Have you read any of his books?

Coming to the end of the year...

  • I didn't bother taking down my trellis systems this year, I will just move them about in the spring.
  • I finished planting all the bulbs.
  • I managed to miss harvesting the last of the leeks, they are frozen in place.
  • I have been collecting bags of coffee grounds from the coffee shop and just dumping them on the vegetable and flower garden beds and in areas I am planning on building up the soil. The 25 pound lumps of frozen grounds and filters will thaw in the spring.
  • I think today is the day to delve into the 2012 catalogs, but first I
have to fetch some emergency rations for the bees. It's so cold today,
it will be a good afternoon to curl up with hot chocolate and go
    shopping...
