Do you have any type of bottom in your box? I staple landscaping weed control cloth to the bottom of my boxes. Prevents weeds, little critters, and ants from coming in through the bottom, but lets water drain.

Hi Phil,

Welcome to the site and ANSFG

Plug " composting 101 " into the white search box at the top of the main page ..

It gives several explanations of how the compost elemets of Mel's Mix are made up.

Those five elements of different sources of compost actually mean five different types of material and they are measured by volume such as by the bucket full .

It does make a tremendous difference to the final finished mixed compost you revitalize the beds with

Not Impressed - Page 2 Empty compost idea on lousy results

Post  curio 2/22/2012, 11:31 am

You mention that part of your compost was labeled simply "compost". Is it possible that you purchased from somewhere that part of the ingredients used to make that compost had been treated with herbicide?
We don't purchase our compost from the county "composting" site, or bags that we're not familiar with the company (and it is organic), preferring to make our own for this reason.
My conventional garden last year was really poor for several of the veggies, but went like gangbusters for others. We're hoping that with the SFG, we'll do even better.
