Last Ingredient? Empty Last Ingredient?

For my compost blend, I have cow manure compost, chicken manure compost, mushroom compost and worm castings. What would you suggest looking for that I can easily find and buy as the final ingredient?

I have recently started my own compost but of course it will not be ready when I need it.

Sounds like your stores have the same selection as mine. Those are the exact same composts I have been able to find so far. I have a friend who may be getting me some horse manure but I dont know what stage it will be at or how long till I could safely add it to the mix. The fifth compost type has been my only trouble spot so far.

Im sure others will chime in as they have done for me. Good luck on that elusive fifth type. Smile

OH! SO CLOSE!!! Last Ingredient? 832433

Have you had a chance to try and find any local farmers? They may be able to help you. I would suggest checking out bulletin boards at local farm and grain stores, chat up the farmers at a local farmers market. Being somewhat near the ocean, maybe you can find something like a lobster or a shrimp compost. Let us know what you find.

Check your local Craigslist. If you can find someone who has rabbits, llamas, goats, horses, etc those are great resources and some, especially the rabbit & llama manure can be used without composting. You may even be able to find some that is at least partially composted. And many times you can even get it for free.

Sounds like you have pretty good selection where you are! When you say "compost" around here, the only thing people think about is cow manure. I was lucky enough to find mushroom compost and peat humus (composted forest floor litter), and for a very short period, there was lobster compost available at one store.

I honestly don't know, lol. I've been looking into it, and I can't seem to find any real answers online. But the bag I got last year for my raspberries said it was forest humus, and the lady at my local nursery said I needed to add that to my soil for the berries. Maybe someone else knows?

Forest humus is ok, but peat humus will make your peat ratio off.

I have a nursery near me, Meadows Farms that sells 3 cu ft bags of leaf compost. Just an idea....
