Hello all,

My name is Scott and live in Dayton Ohio. I have been wanting to get into gardening for a few years but never took the jump until I stumbled upon the SFG method.

Santa brought me the SFG Book and I have read it cover to cover twice already !

I promise to use the search feature before asking any questions that may have been asked and answered 100 times already. LOL

Im looking forward to getting to know you all.

New Member from Ohio 396615 Scott.

I have friends in the Dayton area and of course we took our "little boys" to the Air Force Museum on our way from Offutt AFB, NE to Ft. Meade, MD back in 1989.

You must have been VERY good if Santa brought you the ANSFG book! Well you ARE a good boy if you've already read it twice!

Again, welcome!

Kim

Welcome Neighbor!

I'm over here just southeast of Columbus. Glad to have you join this forum! It is wonderful to see you have already read the book praise . It does help us out when someone takes time to learn the basics first, then asks questions. So Fire Away when your are ready and we'll be happy to help out.

That's a good idea and all, but we are a different brand of people over here when compared to other forums. We aren't going to yell at you for asking questions without searching.

Welcome aboard, Scott. The forum is a great compliment to the book. After you kick the tires a bit, jump in and get active. I also encourage you to look around the regional forums, too. You may find some more local information in there.

My biggest tip for you this time of year is to learn your "frost date." That will help you determine when you can start planting, which will help you budget the time you think you need to build your beds. Everything kind of works backwards off the frost date. And, Mel's appendices are perfect for helping you plan what to plant and when.

Great to have you!

Howdy Neighbor, I'm just south of Middletown! You'll love this method!

Home Depot sells the mushroom compost, manure, peat

Lowe's sells the peat, cow manure,

I get the other indgredients at a independent store in Mason. (posy power, comtil, organic hummus)

Menards sells the peat (but in smaller volume) and mushroom compost and the vermiculite!!!!

Hope that helps you with wondering where to start.

Welcome, Scott! I'm down in Cincinnati and have been sfg-ing for 3 years now. I'm even getting my 8-year-old nephew into it! Best wishes and keep us informed of your efforts.

Post  Red-Leg 1/4/2012, 11:33 pm

Welcome, Scott! I am new to the forum myself, having purchased the SFG book last month. I'm still a bit overwhelmed all the planning I have to do to get ready for spring.

I'm in Cincinnati (Norwood) and am very happy to see a good contingent of local members on the board.

With our local frost dates, I'm thinking I need to get tomato seedlings started early next month and am trying to figure out where I'm going to place them. I'm planning on building a PVC stand and use a pair of shop lights I have extra in the garage. I could make room out there, but it's an unheated, non-insulated, detached garage so I'm thinking that would not be the best spot. We have a canning room in the basement under the front porch and I'm leaning towards that.

Then it's on to planning the garden, building the frames, and sourcing the MM ingredients...yikes!

Regards,
Darren

Welcome, Darren! I'm just around the corner from you - in Mariemont. Glad to have another local here! (It makes BBG so jealous!) Cool

I haven't even ordered any seeds yet. I am hoping to go to AJ Rahn's on Saturday to see if they have any bulbs left. I still believe it is going to get cold for longer than 2 days and the ground is still soft enough to plant tulips.

I'll start broccoli in a few weeks. I will direct-sow the peas on or around Valentine's Day. I found some black seeded simpson seeds at Home Depot last week. Martha Stewart-organic. I have horrible luck with lettuce seeds, but I will try this. All the other varieties I get from Rahns as seedlings.

Okay - I'm signing off and will continue checking out tomatoes from the Baker Creek catalogue. Too. Many. Decisions!

Thanks, Nancy! As this is my first go at this whole thing, am I right in thinking of starting my tomato seedlings around the first week of February?
