hardneck or softnneck garlic?

This fall will be my first time planting garlic. Last year, one of the vendors at the farmer's market a few types of organic garlic, so my plan is to purchase a bulb or two to start in my garden.

For a newbie, is one type easier to grow/harvest/dry/store than the other?

Our family likes scapes, which is hardneck. I think it would be neat to braid together the garlic, which is softneck.

I grew softneck this last season and it was lovely. Make sure there is PLENTY OF COMPOST in the mix where you plant it in the autumn. I topdressed my garlic with compost a few times this spring and I am happy that the bulbs grew bigger than I anticipated. I planted 12 sq. ft with 120 new bulbs harvested. That made 3 braids plus quite a few that could not be braided in, plus the bulbs I will be holding back for planting in the fall. I plan on getting some hardneck to put in too. Looking forward to scapes. What a Face

You have an interesting grower near Madison www.wegrowgarlic.com . Their website has a huge inventory of choices. I bought my new growing stock from them. This will be my first attempt growing commercial varieties. I bought six mixed varieties to experience the differences. That seems to be about how many different types many of the avid growers here plant.

Camprn - 120 bulbs?! How large is your garden?

I did sign up for the We Grow Garlic e-mail list thanks to this site. They aren't too far from us, but five heads of garlic seems like a lot for my 3 squares of garlic this fall. I figure 1-2 heads would be enough for the space we have now.

Our farmer's market had someone selling organic garlic last year. Last year, I recall they had hardneck. I'm thinking of buying the garlic there.

My vegetable garden is 180 sq. ft. but I tend to plant quite intensively. Yes indeed, 120 bulbs of garlic harvested out of 12 sq.ft. most of them are about 1.5 inch across, but quite a few grew to about 2inch. Most of those bigger ones are going for seed in several months.
