Armenian cukes for pickles???
I have a few Armenian (yard long) cucumbers. Can you make pickles with them like you do regular cukes? This is my first year growing them.
Re: Armenian cukes for pickles???
I've never head of them, never grown them so no personal experience. according to this thread from another forum, yes you can make pickles and, Surprise! it's a type of melon.
Let us know how they turn out!

Re: Armenian cukes for pickles???
Sounds like it's time for some cold cucumber soup. Just read an article where a lady had substituted them in her zucchini bread recipe and it turned out wonderful. Some Afghani friends have a resturant and make a drink called
Dogh
* Yogurt
* Cold water
* Cucumber
* Salt
* Dried mint
Instructions
Put 16 ounces of plain yogurt (homemade or store bought) into a large pitcher, and add 4 cups of cold water. Take 1/2 of a cucumber, peel it and cut it into rounds. Take as much or as little of it as you like and finely chop it into small pieces and add it to the mixture. Add about 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the pitcher. Take a pinch of dried mint and rub it between your hands to release some of the essence and sprinkle it over the top of the liquid. Mix well and keep very cold. You can add ice cubes but it will dilute the mix, so I recommend just putting it in the refrigerator.
I don't do a full recipe , it's not a bad drink with a Mideastern meal.

Thanks, I'll see how pickles turn out. The flavor is very good when eaten fresh.

According to the below Wiki link, they are related to muskmelons.

BTW, I just planted my first seeds about an hour ago. I drilled two holes in one SFG square then put two seeds in each hole and filled it in.
I got my seeds from a Master Gardener that I know in Temple, Texas USA. She thinks it might be too late this year to start some but I thought I might give it a try. I still have a bunch more to use in 2018.

Re: Armenian cukes for pickles???
Terry, Have you been SFG gardening since you first joined the Forum?
Re: Armenian cukes for pickles???
Terry, thanks for the link. I made the pickles and they were quite good. Texture was still firm, but not as much as a cucumber.
