Oh my gosh, I missed the first page of this thread.
What delicious berries. It made my mouth water to see them. They are about my favorite fruit so I'm eager to harvest some of mine soon.
I know they were heartily enjoyed.

As for the strawberries, do you have berries yet?
My blossoms are now beginning to form into the green nubs of berries.
I think it might be time to cover with netting so this year I get them instead of the birds.

Yup you need to cover them! I didn't till a couple of years ago and was getting aggrevated because I got so few and was ready to say the heck with it. Then I covered with the tulle and I get a lot!

That is an awesome railroad setup he must spend a lot of time developing it and a few bucks too. When my sons were small I did some model RR but not nearly like that. There used to be a model train museum near Colfax just north of I-80. Not sure if it is still there don't go east much now but it was a fun stop for a RR'er.

This was our first, and very small, harvest. But the berries are fabulous this year, and we sold one, count'em one, strawberry shortcake tonight to a hand-picked customer.

They are real! I am pretty proud!

However, here is a photo of my Alpine strawberry plant that I grew last year from seed. The berries are plentiful and ripening, but they look dry. Anyone have an experience, ideas, suggestions?

Are the Alpines the wild-ish, small ones? We had wild strawberries at a previous house growing along the road and everywhere. They were tiny but good.

What kinds of strawberries is everyone growing? I heard about Sparkles on this forum, and I think I'm going with them next year.

yes, that's the Alpines. Last time I had them (only about 30 years ago!) they were tiny, sweet and delicious.

Most of mine are Honeoyes. I dont' remember what my older beds are. Embarassed

I am going to can mine. found instructions...just strawberries/sugar/tapioca. Cross your fingers for me! I have canned a lot of tomatoes in my life but not strawberries! I didn't know you could.

Sometimes I feel that way! I have even found birds going under the netting on the sides and getting into the bed that way! Not enough to warrant covering the sides with tulle because I have to have the pollinators, but definitely might make a cage for next year instead of tulle! make a good winter project.

What would be wrong with a cage made using chicken wire so the pollinators could get in. Beyond wrens no other bird could get in. It's mostly robins that invade my strawberries and my wrens are welcomed anywhere. I currently use the berry netting flexible plastic product.

Great cage Boog. Looks like it will protect your berries from birds, squirrels, rabbits or other pests. What is the mesh screening on it? The close up makes it look like it is sturdier than chicken wire, maybe welded wire or is it netting? Is that a pvc frame?

the screen is actualy plastic fencing i had left over has 3/4 inch holes. frame is made from a 2X4 i ripped down to 3/4X3/4 inch peices and its held togather with electric fence wire. maybe the other half can eat this before a bird does Strawberries!!! - Page 2 959632

Since I activated my high-tech bird deterrent system (feline variety), I haven't lost any strawberries.

OK, maybe I'm just being too impatient, but we haven't seen any strawberries yet. I have a 4x4 box with Tribute and Mara Des Bois strawberries which were sown as transplants on April 30th. They seem to be growing, but have produced VERY few flowers (none yet on the Mara Des Bois). I get excited each time I see a flower, and it turns into a little green berry, but then it seems to dry up and go away. I have a bird net over the box so the many birds in our yard don't get to them, but I don't know we aren't seeing any edible fruit yet.

Is it simply too soon? :scratch:

my problem is the felines are sometimes guilty of more damage than the birds!
