Garlic, shallots and 3 different onions are planted in this mess.
It all was doing nicely till a storm last night, I removed al scapes yesterday and were they ever delicious.

Kay - I planted my garlic and shallots 3/2/14. Do you plant yours in the fall. My garlic leaves browned and fell over and I pulled the garlic on 6/1/14. The bulbs were puny. My shallots are still going but getting brown on the tips. But the individual bulbs of the shallots do not look anywhere near as large as the shallots I planted.
The shallots are about the size of your shallots in this picture.

This is normal. Shallots are biennial. The daughter bulbs next year should be larger.

The shallots are about the size of your shallots in this picture.

This picture was taken May 2012. I planted the garlic and shallots from this crop in Oct of 2012 and got a indifferent crop in 2013. I planted the 2013 crop in Nov and got small garlic again this month. Shallots are still in the ground but the tips are turning brown. All years I put some bone meal on the bed in the spring to encourage root growth. We shall see.

Shallots and bunching onions are different from each other. Shallots are small, mild onions that are dry.

With the gardener's permission, I wanted to share these photos. She is in central Texas so dates may be different depending on the grow Region or Zone. She spread them on racks in the garage for a couple of weeks for curing. Some of the 5-quart harvest will be diced and dehydrated. The rest will go into a mesh bag for storage.

I have never grown shallots nor cooked with them. But, I thought her photos and explanations were worth sharing.

I used to grow shallots. But I never found a variety that would work well in Georgia.
