What mulch to use?
This is my first year with SFG methods. So far it is a whopping success. I would like to know what mulch others use and how deep it should be.
I'll post pictures when I figure out how to do it. I started big with 10 boxes. They look beautiful!

I am anxious to see your 10 boxes!
Due to my climate, I don't use mulch in my SFG. My weather is cool, foggy, cloudy and moist so mulch is not as important here as in other areas.

Re: What mulch to use?
I really don't intend to mulch, either. I would only do so in the heat of summer...or in winter when I am trying to keep my carrots in the ground as long as possible.
If I mulched, though, my first choice would likely be straw because it's easy to work with. But, I also use what I have on hand. And, as a landscaper, I have access to a lot of chipped wood and bark mulch like Cypress and Cedar. Those would do fine, too.

Re: What mulch to use?
I put down some mulch for the first time this week. I'm using a bag of "compost" that is more like small pieces of wood and leaves. So far I'm very pleased with it. I've also been experimenting with "sheet mulching" using mylar. That's a bit of a pain to work with. I remember my grandparents always mulched with lawn clippings and had great success.

Re: What mulch to use?
I just mulched with pine needles. I chose them because I got them for free. I just put it out a couple of days ago and it seems to be working even with the high temps here. I only did maybe 2 inches thick.
Re: What mulch to use?
2-3 inches of whatever you want. Most folks like straw. I use pine bark and newspaper.
