Hi there! I'm just about to try to find the ingredients for the soil for my first Square Foot Garden (4'x16').

I bought a house last September and my yard...hmm, not sure, maybe I should just call it a beach...except I'm not near water. Yup, tons of sand. Not great for plants. So when a co worker brought in her SFG book, I knew I just had to give it a try.

Now if I can only find vermiculite...

Greetings Lil Hello from upstate NY 396615 to the SFG Forum!!! I am about 2 hours east of you. Good luck in the hunt for Mel's Mix ingredients. It should be pretty straight forward. The search feature on the forum works pretty well and many of us will try to answer questions. DO call for help if you need it. Did you get your own copy of the All New Square Foot Gardening book yet? Wink

Hello from upstate NY 396615 LilBlondie

You are going to be so happy using the ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING method. It is such a great way to grow veggies without weeding or digging.

For your first set up, you may have to dig a bit to level your garden, but nothing like you may have done in the past. And Mel's Mix is such a wonderful medium in which to grow your plants. Loose, fluffy, and drains well, but still retains moisture for your babies.

Keep us posted on your progress and please share pictures, because we love them.

Again, Welcome.

Welcome aboard! You have just found the nicest people on any forum on the web.

Yeah, sand stinks. But, SFG fixes that. Just build right on top. Suddenly, you will love the drainage from underneath.

If you have that much sand in your soil, I would go poking around the forum and read up on the "worm tubes" threads. Get a compost pile started when you feel comfortable and let the worms rejuvinate your garden 24/7. They will love the compost, and you likely don't have many in that soil. But, I don't know. I've been a Midwesterner all my life.

Hope to see you around.
