they're gonna get HOW big?,
So the book says to plant zukes one per 2 squares. So I did. Well, I actually put 3 in one square because I'm really new to this, and having killed a good many plants in my day... so I just got rid of two of them (tried to move them actually, and they got mad at me and died), and so the one remaining one has two squares to itself. I have no idea if it's a vining type as it was a gift from a fellow gardening friend. What can I do to make sure it doesn't take over nine squares? I can't spare a square...
Thanks!!!
Thanks!!!

Re: they're gonna get HOW big?,
In MM, it will take over 9 squares, no matter what type it is!
I have 5 planted in 10 squares. They have taken over each other, and the surrounding territory. At least, planting them all together, much of the 9 squares each plant takes up is just more squash squares anyway.
We have grown squash before, but I've never seen anything like this (1st year SFG)!
Someone posted a way to trellis such squash. She plants a secure, hefty stake with the squash, and then ties it to the stake repeatedly as it grows. She trims off all leaves that are below the fruit. In this manner, she actually has grown summer squash 1 per square. It made for a pretty wild picture, a squash plant 4 feet in the air! Wish I could find the thread that mentioned it, but I think I described it pretty well. I could draw it, if you like...

Re: they're gonna get HOW big?,
Hmmm I'll have to search for that. Since it's already planted, I don't want to have to pull it out now, so if I can trellis it successfully, I'ma give it a go.
Thanks so much for your answer.

Well, I am reminded to search before I ask. This topic has been well discussed. I am going to try the stake and prune method. I'll report back.

Re: they're gonna get HOW big?,
Ah, I'm glad you found it! I must not have used the right search terms, or maybe I'm just tired. It looks pretty crazy, doesn't it? I think I might try it myself... my five squash plants have totally taken over!!!
Re: they're gonna get HOW big?,
I thought I posted this but I can't find it now.
This was a video from mysquarefootgarden.net that was posted on this forum once before.
Its a great way to save space.
The video is quite long but very informative about many crops.

That is an incredible video!!! (Although it did make me feel a little motion sick...)
That's the same tomato pruning idea that Acara uses! I'm going to start that, and the summer squash one.
