Leggy Collards and Cabbage

Hi Everyone,

I bought some collards and cabbage well over a month ago, and put them in a large tub with potting soil to "hold" them until I got the SFG together. In this time, they have grown to about 15" high, with the leaves out the top of the tub, and the soil line only about 4-5 " deep, leaving about 8-10" of stem. Will I need to bury them 'up to their necks' in MM in a five gal pail? Try to plant them more horizontally (like Mel describes on pg 159-160)? Just plant them as is in the 6" of MM and stake them up? I have four of each, so I may just experiment and give each idea a try! Thanks for your thoughts!

Leggy plants are a pain in the toush. I did plant my leggy broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower as deep as I could in the SFG bed, but would not go to the extreme of trying to cover the whole stem. They now seem to be getting more sturdy and bushy.

When you planted in the tub, were they in an area that got lots of sun? Usually a lack of light is what causes extreme legginess.
