Send Mel some get well wishes!
We are very sorry to report that Mel had a serious fall last week at his residence in San Diego while on a one-year sabbatical to write new books.
He was taken to the Scripps Institute Hospital with a left hip break and has now been relocated to a longer term rehab center where he will stay for a month before being reevaluated for next steps in his recovery.
Mel’s a hard man to keep down, but the accident has forced him to cancel short term projects and travel plans for the next few months. While our thoughts and well wishes are obviously with Mel, the work of the Foundation is continuing all other projects and operations under the direction of Mr. Carl Mann, from Chicago, President of the Board of Directors, and Ms. Victoria Boudman, Director of Operations at the Ogden, Utah, location.
Mel would love to hear from you with your best wishes and news of your SF Garden activities or projects, so we have set up a special email address where Mel can read your letters. Unfortunately, Mel won’t be able to reply to your e-mail notes as he completes his recovery, but he would sure love to hear from you. Please send your e-mail notes and cards to: GetWellMel@yahoo.com.
As you begin your spring Square Foot Gardening projects, please keep Mel in your thoughts and best wishes!

We know what Deb meant
Good wishes sent, along with an invitation to join us again here on the forum, since his physical activities will be limited for a while.

Get well, Mel! Maybe a "chat" sometime while recupirating would be great for all the new members.

I wonder if there is anything we could do cumulatively as a group and send to Mel while he is in bed??

Re: Send Mel some get well wishes!
It might be fun to each take a photo of ourselves in our garden and send that to a central location with a packet of our favorite seeds. We could write our location on the back of the photo and whoever wants to receive them could organize them by region/country into a photo album and send it on to Mel. I'm sure he already knows how many gardens he has inspired around the world, but it might be fun to look at if he's ever feeling down--especially if he loves photos half as much as we do. The seeds we could donate to the foundation if they need them for teaching/getting people started in areas where they are not readily available or people can't afford them. Maybe something along those lines? Or is that too complicated?

If the hospital would permit, perhaps some of us nearby could take Mel some fresh produce!

So sorry to hear this. I hope he is on the mend. He has a lot of people hoping for the best.
Re: Send Mel some get well wishes
Get Well Wishes are sent your way for a speedy recovery from a long time fan of your original Square Foot Gardening system..----watched your shows on public television all those years, and planted my big back yard with veggies and flowers the SF way....
But in 1992 when my husband died ...I traveled and gave up gardening....
Now I am a Tabletopper with 90 squares and loving it again.....and love your new book...bought your
new book---your DVD's also 3 books ...teaching Children the SFway.....I keep one and loan out the other 2...also I teach a few preschoolers that are near me...
One of my daughters lives in Lehi,Utah...visited there last summer....did a tabletop on sawhorses.
Left town 2 weeks before your class in Eden....didnt know about it...would have loved it...
I am so lucky...I can garden all year long ...here..in Chula Vista, Ca....about 10 miles north of the border..near San Diego Bay..
Scripps Hospital is the best...I am sure you will do well again....enjoy La Jolla and North County and continue with all your planned projects...Ruth ( I think I am the oldest on the forum.....after 80 yrs "young" we brag about it)

UPDATE
I got the following update from Alan on Mel today.
He has left the hospital and is recuperating at his home. We visit him regularly to make sure he is doing ok. He loved the well wishes from all the forum members and is very thankful for them. His recovery will be fairly long as he really hurt himself and he is antsy as he likes to
move and travel and talk to people!

mels unfortunate mishap
I attempted to e-mail Mr. Bartholomew but I couldn't get past my 'puter illiteracy.I will do it here.Mel ,you are in our thoughts, but that won't accomplish much.I will keep you in our prayers and will look forward to buying more of your books as they are more dependable than 'puters or the TV.
